i know absolutely, positively nothing about hunting game birds such as mourning dove, quail, etc. (no one in my family has hunted such things)
by next season im possibly looking into these as possibilities.
does anyone have any good book suggestions, etc. for learning about these type of game birds ?
thought about joining QU (quail unlimited just to start finding out about these things)
any thoughts or suggestions regarding this subject would be greatly appreciated.

I think you should buy you a good English setter pup and he will teach you every thing you need to know, and I just happen to know where you can find one. ;D

Dove hunting is nothing but leading and shooting.

The best suggestion I can give is what you're looking for probably won't come from a book.
See if you can go with someone who has hunted dove, quail, pheasant. You'll learn more from actually doing it than reading a book.
Quail Unlimited and Pheasant Forever are great organizations to belong to...there you'll meet hunters with interests similar to yours.

I say jaybob is half right, an English pup can teach you. Let me know if you need a few pointers.

The Indianapolis Boat Sport and Travel Show begins on February 16 and runs through February 26. Pheasants Forever will have a booth out at the State Fairgrounds (Tackle Town T-611) everyday of the show. I should be there everyday. If I''m not there, there will be a gang of guys better versed in the uplands than me to help answer your questons. All are members of Pheasants Forever, Quail Unlimited (they usually have a booth also), and the Ruffed Grouse Society. There's also a lot of the sporting dog groups out there especially the first week-end during the Deer and Turkey Expo so if you get a chance come on out and talk my ear off. Can't guarantee you'll learn much but I'll bet I can tell you a lie or three.

I'll have to second the "hunt with someone who knows" idea. This is the best way to learn bird hunting. Two good dogs will save you a LOT of walking.
As far as doves go, get permission near a cattle feedlot, pack some sandwiches and drinks in a cooler, and take plenty of shells. Fun times...

Camoham, hook-up with some veteran local birders with good dogs. It will reduce your learning curve time by @ least 50% . Have fun & good luck.
