I don’t know what is going on there. I’ve also seen where the pages for “projected deer seasons” is a non-page too.
Maybe they are trying to tell us something??
Here is what I found on Indiana Game and Fish Magazine…www.indianagameandfish.com/hunting/pheasant-hunting/in_aa111804a/RUMORS OF CHANGE "A few years ago, there were rumors the DFW planned to eliminate the put-and-take pheasant hunting program," said Glen Salmon, director of the DFW. "All the division's programs are scrutinized periodically, and when we took a good look at the put-and-take program, the decision was made to continue the annual hunt and to make the put-and-take program the very best it can be. We also want to make it a tool to retain current hunters and to recruit future hunters. "We know there are hunters who try it once or twice and never again. We know there are people who think about trying it, but shy away for some or many reasons. The division is currently exploring ways to improve on our current methods, which could include additional, more convenient ways to register for the hunts prior to coming to the property, possibly through the new computerized hunting and fishing license sales system scheduled to be activated in 2005."

Personally, I really think the new system is going to hurt participation in these hunts. I know for myself, I try to get out a couple times during the put and take but the number of guys and what days we go is usually a last minute thing. The flexibility is what alot of people liked. It may or may not affect the guys that go several times every year, but I think a lot of hunters are going to be hesitant to put the money down up front and be locked into a specific day and number of hunters. We need the last minute hunters and the first timers to keep the program going. I think it's only a matter of time until put and take gets the axe. It seems the more we pay for licenses or the more programs we pay for out of pocket, the more we lose. Their even going to start charging for the reserved dove hunts now, after the disaster of this year it's going to be hard to get people to pay to do it next year. All of our programs are in jeopardy, especially with Hupfer as director.

I'm assuming that they will still take in Walk In hunters on the Put and Take dates. Mongo never seems to fill their limits (except for Thanksgiving).
So, if someone (who didn't pre-register) would show up around 7 (hunting starts at 9) and if they have room, they would probably put the birds out and let them hunt.

I was told that it was by reservation only. To be honest, I think they are still a little unsure how they are going to do it and if it will work.

I confirmed it today. No walk-in hunters will be accepted. You MUST reserve your spot through the on-line registration on the DNR website and you must pay on-line when you register. They will NOT take walk-in hunters to fill any un-reserved spots.

Wow, that's going to cause some problems...there will be a lot of guys who don't know about pre-registering and will show up...and be ticked when they can't get in. Although the first year of any new procedure will always have glitches....I reserved 4 days of put and take...it was real easy and it's nice that I don't have to stand in line. There have been places in Illinois that have been taking pre-registration for years.

I think it's a decent idea and it's nice to get rid of the early mornings and long lines, but I think it's definitely going to hurt the number of hunters who participate. Unfortunately, I think it's a program that the DNR is looking to eliminate in the future and a lack of participation gives them another excuse. If we want to keep programs such as put and take we need all the spots filled and hunters asking for more.

You make a good point....I hope they never get rid of it. It's a place I know my dog will be on birds. I wouldn't mind paying more for the two birds if that would help defray the costs.
