This is what so many young hunters in Ontario start out hunting for. I will always remember the trips down old logging roads with my dad and grandad hunting for birds. Never realized till then that any other bird is just a bird where as a grouse is a BIRD!!! At first I was aloud to take along my pellet gun to get the stupid ground huggers while the old boys used the shotguns. When I got a little older my dad would take me in the bush and I got to carry his old Savage spring operated semi, the thing was heavier then a tank but I was happy as could be. In the off season dad followed me with a bucket of wood blocks. Every once and awhile he'd throw one out, never knew when or where it would go. The man even gave me sound effects. When I heard that flushing sound from his lips, man was I ready. Took awhile but I was finally able to hit the wood on a regular basis and dad told me I was ready. That fall I got a nice suprise Model 500 Mossberg 12 guage. Dad said if I learned to take good care of it, it would last a lifetime. Still use it from time to time, many friends have borrowed over the years for there kids as well. Never jams but not real pretty. Friends tease me calling it the crowbar but it has never jammed and some of those guys even consider it their back up. Had many calls over the years, hey T.J. can I borrow the crowbar to cold and wet for my good gun. ;D. Anyway that first fall I go out with dad for my first official grouse hunt. First bird I see is on the ground and just like the pellet gun aim dead on and let her have it. Ended up with about a three foot bird. After dad quit laughing he says aim a little above the head next time. Ended up getting 5 birds on that walk, the old man none but what a smile on his face. Know that I have kids I understand that smile. Thanks DAD I love you for everything.

ditto....... Thats part of the next thing we need to get done at the DNR..... We need a habitat management plan for the greatest game bird of them all.
Speaking of Grouse , If any of you are NRA members and get American Hunter Magizine you need to look on the very last page and read THAT grouse story! Unbelievable but the guy had a picture to back up his story.

I agree GunDude. It is a habitat thing with grouse. If this administration will manage our forests with grouse in mind it will bring many other non game species back as well. Out great HNF needs to be better managed as well, might upset some folks but old growth forests are not what grouse and other game and non game birds and animals need. NO CLEAR CUT just manage.

Yep, Old growth forest is a "dead forest" for the most part. Hard to convience people of that but the ones that are against it never spend any time in the woods so they just dont understand how nature works. I hunted last year on place that was hit by a tornado a few years back. TALK ABOUT HABITAT! Birds everywhere as well as deer and everything else.Mother Nature knows how to Get R done from time to time.

Actually I did attend some of the DNR Forest Service meetings and commented on the proposed management plan for The Hoosier National Forest. While the feds are at least upgrading the HNF plan I have heard nothing about managing the state forests. Back in the day we used to move grouse all the time at Morgan-Monroe and Owen-Putnam forests. Haven't seen a grouse there for 3 years. I will say that I fully expect Fish & Wildlife to come back and reduce either the grouse season or the bag limit in the next year or two if the populations don't rebound.

Jack Jack, As you well know that was an IDNR proposal during the last Administrative Rules process. It got shot down at the final NRC meeting.. Who knows in the future....

Yeah, I know it got shot down because I was there along a few others and we objected enough that the NRC deleted only one thing from the rules package - the shortening of grouse season. Steve Backs (supposedly grouse biologist for IDNR) has as much said they will revisit this issue.

Back in the 80's we had decent grouse populations in and around Brown County. Still some birds there but I feel guilty taking even one bird a day from there. And don't even get me started about woodcock.

The last time i went to the U.P. to my favorite grouse spot i shot 4 the first day. I use a 28ga o/u and blew a chance to shoot a limit on the rise a few days later. if i had taken my 20 semi auto i could have limited out. my Brit pointed not far from camp and two birds came up and one came straight at me. I wasn't ready cause i thought she was pointing woodcock. I emptied both barrels and stood and watched as five more came up in singles like someone was throwing them out of a trap. before i could reload they were gone. its common to see several coveys 3 - 6 birds rise up. the most i saw was 10 birds go up in single file, what a sight. where i hunt there are so many woodcock my Brit would point an average of 30 birds or so in 2 - 3 hours. a lot of the woodcock are doubles and some triples. I stay a month usually when i go and in this time my dog would probably point 600 - 800 or more birds. Michigan season starts the 15th of September i sure would like to go again. h.h.
