TERRE HAUTE — An Indianapolis man killed in an apparent hunting accident in Parke County died of a gunshot wound to the head, officials said.
Paul Wathen, 42, of Indianapolis was found Monday around 7:30 a.m. at the base of an elevated tree stand at a hunting camp about two miles north of Coxville in southern Parke County. Officers were called to the camp, on property belonging to Ron Richardson, also of Indianapolis. Richardson alerted authorities when Wathen, his hunting companion, had not returned from a hunt after more than 12 hours.
Wathen was shot at close range, but police stopped short of saying he shot himself, pending an ongoing investigation. His gun was found nearby.
It is unknown whether Wathen fell from the tree stand. He was not wearing a safety harness, according to a media release from Max Winchell, Indiana Conservation Officer, District 5.
An autopsy performed Monday afternoon by Vigo County Coroner Dr. Roland Kohr indicated the preliminary cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head. The shot came from a .20 gauge shotgun, according to Winchell.
According to the news release, Wathen had left his cabin around 3 p.m. Sunday to go deer hunting. Richardson had stayed back at the cabin as he was not feeling well, according to the release. Richardson heard Wathen shoot around 4 p.m., he told officers. Richardson became concerned that his friend had not returned and began searching for him at 7:30 p.m.
He searched until 11:30 p.m., police said. Richardson told officers he believed that Wathen was out searching for a deer that he had shot, so Richardson returned to the cabin.
When Wathen still had not returned to the cabin by 5:30 a.m., Richardson began calling friends and police. Indiana Conservation Officers, members of the Parke County Sheriff's Department and volunteers began a search of the area. A volunteer search team member found Wathen about 500 yards from the cabin, according to the release. Parke County Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene.
There was no sign of foul play, investigators said.
