The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the deer hunting rules for the 2005-2006 season will be changed in August. The new rules will allow the use of centerfire or highpowered rifles during an extended antlerless deer hunting season in an area includes that Des Moines, Henry and Lee counties The changes, which will help decrease the growing number of deer in Iowa, come after a series of public hearings throughout the state. The extended antlerless deer season will run from January 11 through January 22. The use of high-powered rifles will be allowed only during the last seven days of that period. The D-N-R has also decided to add a new anterless deer season in November. It will be after Thanksgiving, running that Friday through Sunday. The D-N-R also will increase the number of antlerless deer licenses by 19-thousand.
