I AM CONCERNED THAT WITH THE UNCERTAINTY OF RAIN THIS TIME OF YEAR THAT, THE PLOT WILL NOT GROW AND MATURE BY MID-OCTOBER, WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK The odds of a good rain are mighty slim, at least here on the SW end of the State. I would wait until next year to plant and save your "seed" money.

Depends on what you want to plant...
It's a slightly different scenario, but the best time to plant turfgrass is in the first two weeks of September.
Doesn't take a whole lot of rain to get a plot going, especially if it will be an "annual" type of plot (oats, etc). I'd definately strongly consider planting even if it will be a perennial plot (chicory, clover, brassica, etc) for the same reasons turfgrass is planted at that time.
The biggest reason is there will be less competition from weeds next year. The weed seeds will germinate at the same time as your plot seeds but they won't mature soon enough to produce seedheads and will die off with the first frost, giving what you have sowed a chance to fill in and take over.
If it were me, I'd plant it. But that's just me.

Fall plots should be planted in our area around Aug 15th which is now so plant away. Any of the fall plot blends will work. Just make sure you fertilize. h.h.

Plant around Labor day. You don't want to plant too early. If planted early the plants get big and stems get tough.
Cool nights and warm days will make fall plots grow well and fast.
Rain will be the big factor.

I was going to plant ours this weekend, however with the lack of rain the ground is like concrete and my disk that I have works best with somewhat moist dirt. I'm waiting until next Friday the 24th of August. The almighty weather men are calling for rain from the 18th-22nd so this will help. I will be planting clovers, alfalfa, brassicas, and oats. I planted some plots the first of August last year(sorghum, turnips) and the deer had them eaten by September 15th. I'm going to wait a few more days this year. Make sure to fertilize!
