Help! I saw the coolest flower in the woods the other day but I can't for the life of me figure out what it is. I'm not much of a flower guy so I don't know where to start I've been looking at pics on the net but can't find any that match. I don't know wht family or anything this is all I know is that it was yellow and looked very odd, it sort of dangled and had a small opening on the top. If you know of a good book I can look through to find this thing I'd be very apriciative. I've seen bird books that have all the species listed with a pic something like that would be good I've never seen this type of flower before so it may be a bit rare??? so some dime store book probably won't cut it. any help is welcome, thank you.

LOL. I have to ID a lot of plants at my job, a lot of times with a pretty vague description. If I had a pic to go by I can usually find it in a couple of minutes.

How long do they stay in bloom, are they rare in Southern Indiana? and if I can find it again I'll take a pic (I need to find a good digital cam for neat stuff found in the woods).

"Newcomb's Wild Flower Guide" is awsome once you get the hang of using the key. It has pretty much everything in Indiana I have ever found. I have owned at least 3 copies since college.

Good job chico. And I thought that you only specialized in mice identification.

Not sure Hawkeye, I can look it up. This isn't a flower you are going to find big patches of. From what I've read, they are found throughout most of Indiana, but they aren't "common." To me that says not rare, but you won't likely find one every time you step into the woods.

P.S. Duff is spot on about the Newcomb's guide. They are fairly extensive. There is almost always at least one copy available at major bookstores.

Lady Slipper,I knew what it was as soon as I read the description.I have found maybe a dozen of them in my life. They are fairly rare in Indiana. My Grandpa worked for and retired from the U.S. Forest Service,so he spent his whole life in the woods. He found a pink one once. If you find a pink one you have really done something.
