Booked an elk hunt for next October near Gunnison Colorado with my dad and a couple buddies. 2x1 Guided, stay in a cabin @ 9000' w/ woodstove & shower, hunting on private ground, first rifle season, guaranteed tag, and you can shoot a cow, if you don't see a bull that suits you.
Last season, one of my buddies went on the same hunt and 4 hunters killed (2) 5x5, (1) 6x6, (1) 6x7 & a cow. This deal sounds sweet! Can't wait to go.
My only previous elk hunt was a unsuccessful, do it yourself, archery hunt to Idaho.
Any experienced elk hunters here?

Steiny, With your experience, I doubt you need any advice hunting any big game anywhere. I have hunted elk in the Gunnison forest 5 of the past 10 years. I have killed 3 bulls, but never anything monstrous. I never use a guide, howvever, and only hunt public ground. I have a buddy who hunts a private ranch nearby, and always kills a bull there. He has taken a couple dandies too. I only hunt muzzleloader when I can draw a tag, since regular rifle on public ground is mostly worthless. Given the record on the ground you are hunting, I'll bet you have a great time. What an awesome wife! I think I am getting a subscription to sausage of the month club. Though I'm sure you do have an awesome wife, sorry about the reference in my last post. When I wrote it, I could have swore you mentioned you received the trip as a gift. However you get there, I am envious of the the great trip you have planned. Like you, I've seen a bunch of this country, but the remote Rockies in the fall are still one of the most scenic places on earth. Don Mulligan www.outdoorswithdon.com
