I wanted to try and get one gun that would give me the most flexibility possible, so I went with a 30-06. What scope powers would you guys reccommend?

Depends on what your hunting? Deer 3x9, varmints 4x12, squirrel...oh wait nevermind!

I was looking at a 5X15 for all around versatility...

5x15 Is too powerful on the low end 5X setting and 15X is never needed on a hunting rig, IMO. Suggest forgetting all the unnecessary magnification, and get high quality optics. A Leupold 2x7 is a sweet rig for a hunting rifle.

Thanks for the advice. I am planning on choosing my scope carefully! Would a VX-I or VX-II be a good one?

For a .30-06 I highly recommend either a Redfield or Leupold either a 2-7 power or 3-9 power. What brand of rifle did you buy?

I prefer the VX 11. It costs more but has better coatings. A 2X7 or 3X9 would be hard to beat for a deer gun.

I have a Savage 30-06 with a 3-9 Leupold. I debated the 2-7 as well; in the end it probably doesn't matter much.

I put a 3X9 vx2 on my '06 and wish I'd put a 2X7 on instead. In the woods it doesn't have a very wide field of view, even on 3X. If it wasn't so expensive I think a 1.5X5 vx3 would make a great choice for woodland hunting. My slug gun has a 1.5X Weaver micro trac and I've hardly ever wished for more magnification around southern IN. Slim

Unless you are hunting a bean field the 3 X 9 is over kill.
The 1.5 to 5 is a good choice in a variable.
I use a fixed 4 power.

I HAD a 3x9 on my deer rifle for my trips to S. Carolina. It lasted one year. THe corn pile is normally 150-200 yards away. In that 3x9 they looked about an inch tall. I slapped a 6.5x20x 52 on there.

I scope all of my deer guns with a Simmons Atec. It's got a long eye relief so you don't bust your forehead open when you get excited and a low enough end and a good high end so hunting in thick stuff or an open field is all good.
