This is a "red bear" (color phase of the black bear) that my friend and long time hunting buddy John Trout Jr. got a week or so ago in Idaho. John has a bum shoulder and used a crossbow to bag the bear. John said the picture doesn't do the bear justice. The bear topped out at 300 pounds. The check station in that area of Idaho said it was the second biggest bear registered this year - including spring bears..

That is an excellent Bear woody. Your friend John, which happens to be a great Hunter name (LOL) should be very proud.

He has the kill on video, but he said that arrow was so quick you couldn't really see much of it. John is an outdoor writer and his story/pics will be in a magazine somewhere someday.

I can't remember the name ot the air strip....It's a government air strip, but they use it and run their bear and Elk camp out of it.

I don't know man, looks real famliar. Looks like Moose Creek just before where it dumps into the Selway river. That patch of woods between the 2 runways had a outfitter camp set up. Then at the far right of your photo on the main runway was a ranger cabin and that's where the forestry ranger Connie works.
We never used the outfitter there, we camped and hunted ourself. In 2 trips we took 3 bears.

Thats the place ! We met Connie, very nice and tough gal. Packs in 28 miles alone in the spring and stays until the snow makes her leave in the fall. What a job !!
You can see the Selway in the toip of the picture just right of center.

What a small world. That place is out in the middle of no where. We had a blast camping and absolutely the best mushroom picking I ever seen. Even I could pick a grocery sack full.
Did you do any good hunting? What did you think of that outfitter? We never used them but heard mix results.
We took a plane out of Hamilton Montana to fly in there.

We didn't do any good hunting. The outfitter left a lot to be desired. The owner told us what we wanted to hear and when we got to camp we found out most of it was B.S. The head guide didn't even know we were bowhunting until we got off the plane. They told us they only had one stand set up for bowhunters. Then a film crew from Buckmasters came in and shot a P & Y class bear out of a bowhunting stand that we were told a bear had destroyed. The owner wasn't even in camp until Buckmasters came in. He was ALL about impressing them. Guides who had never hunted with a bow, baits that were brand new and never been hit, sitting on the ground beside a tree instead of in a stand, I could go on and on about it. The mountains were great, but Boulder Creek outfitters will never have my business again.

Sorry to hear about the rough time. Like I mentioned we did "do it yourself hunts" and it cost us about $600 a piece. It is truly geat country with the nearest road about 40 miles away.
I'd like to go back again. We sure did pack a bunch of miles in there. Trip was extremely physical. The last bear we took my partner and I was stalking Hell Creek when we jumped it. It went 6'-6" and had a 19-1/2" skull.

Very nice ! That is the only guided hunt I've ever been on. They flew us in and out all meals and 2 bear tags...(like that did us good !) $2200.00 !! That included tags but not the cost to drive out there. I would go on a do it yourself hunt just to set my own tent up right next to his camp ! This is my buddy Rob, the head guide Wade and me on my last day in camp...my birthday! Can you tell from the look on my face how happy I am ?!
