www.ledger-enquirer.com/mld/ledgerenquirer/sports/12208668.htmGeorgia opposes 'fenced' hunting From staff reports While the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division, was developing its statewide comprehensive deer management plan, the Georgia Wildlife Federation was simultaneously conducting its own white-tailed deer management survey addressing key deer-hunting issues. From the survey, GWF learned the following: • Nearly 88 percent of hunters in Georgia are opposed to hunting inside fenced compounds. Instead, they prefer more ethical, "fair chase" practices. • About 62 percent support a limit on the number of non-resident deer hunting licenses issued in Georgia. Such a measure could affect regular out-of-state hunters in border areas like the Chattahoochee Valley. • More than 80 percent support a ban on the importation of deer, elk and other related species to prevent an outbreak of Chronic Wasting Disease in Georgia. • Having a repeat violator of game laws subject to felony charges after three or more violations is greatly supported by about 87 percent of resident hunters. • More than 70 percent support a license fee increase to create additional funds to compensate for WRD's shortfall in its operational funding.
