Text for the Day -- I Chronicles 21:1-2, 7-8 ---------- Satan stood up against Israel, and incited David to count the people of Israel. So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, "Go, number Israel, from Beer-sheba to Dan, and bring me a report, so that I may know their number."
But God was displeased with this thing, and he struck Israel. David said to God, "I have sinned greatly in that I have done this thing. But now, I pray you, take away the guilt of your servant; for I have done very foolishly."
Devotional ---------- Satan, or the Adversary, is a figure in the Old Testament that is connected to evil or misfortune. David is tempted by Satan to count the number of men available in Israel to fight as soldiers. This was forbidden to do. David violated this taboo and Israel suffered for it. A pestilence fell on Israel and many thousands died.
Prayer --------------- Keep me alert to temptation, O Lord. Amen
