Text for the Day -- I Corinthians 11:27-33 ---------- Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be answerable for the body and blood of the Lord. Examine yourselves, and only then eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For all who eat and drink without discerning the body, eat and drink judgment against themselves. For this reason many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. But if we judged ourselves, we would not be judged. But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
So then, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.
Devotional ---------- The Eucharistic meal of the Christian Church has its roots in the Passover meal. A lamb was sacrificed and its blood becomes an identification marker of one who is to be passed over by death when one carries that mark or is put on the door post. It is the gift of life. Jesus speaks of his own death as a gift of life. His cross becomes the mark worn on the forehead of the baptized. Participating in the Eucharist is remembering Jesus' gift and living it out in care for the others in the Christian community.
Prayer --------------- Give me a desire to share in the Eucharist and live out the love given me, Lord. Amen
