Text for the Day -- Genesis 30:1-5, 22-24 ---------- When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, she envied her sister; and she said to Jacob, "Give me children, or I shall die!" Jacob became very angry with Rachel and said, "Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?" Then she said, "Here is my maid Bilhah; go in to her, that she may bear upon my knees and that I too may have children through her." So she gave him her maid Bilhah as a wife; and Jacob went in to her. And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son.
Then God remembered Rachel, and God heeded her and opened her womb. She conceived and bore a son, and said, "God has taken away my reproach"; and she named him Joseph, saying, "May the LORD add to me another son!"
Devotional ---------- Rachel bears one child with Jacob. He is the youngest of many children borne by Leah and her and Rachel's maidservant. This youngest child becomes Joseph who ultimately enables his people to be saved in Egypt. Joseph becomes the model of faithful following through all sorts of circumstances, trusting God to see him through to the end. Joseph becomes a sign of God's providence and control of events for redemptive purposes.
Prayer ------------------ Help me to live knowing that you are in control, gracious God. Amen
