Text for the Day -- Mark 4:30-32 ---------- He also said, "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade."
Devotional ---------- Jesus compares the kingdom of God to a mustard seed. The mustard seed is among the smallest but grows into a large tree capable of providing shelter for many birds. The kingdom of God often has modest beginnings but grows to a point where it can accomplish God's purpose - God's reign of love, reconciliation and justice can heal the needs and burdens of humanity. The reign of God is not a pompous parade. Jesus speaks of it as a shade from the bright sun. Sometimes you may feel like you are far from the kingdom because you can't seem to make big things happen. Begin with the small things that can make a difference for someone from the perspective of the Gospel.
Prayer ------------------ Keep my zeal for your kingdom alive, O Lord. Amen
