A friend of mine just had to put down his family dog. The dog was getting up in age and came down with cancer.
I know a lot of us reach that point and words mean little to console.
I found this and I think it is very soothing to someone that is putting down a pet..
A Dog's Prayer.
If it should be that I grow weak And pain should keep me from my sleep Then you must do what must be done, For this last battle cannot be won. You will be sad, I understand; Don't let your grief then stay your hand For this day more than all the rest Your love for me must stand the test We've had so many happy years What is to come can hold no fears, You'd not want me to suffer so, The time has come please let me go. Take me where my need they'll tend And please stay with me until the end, Hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time that you will see, The kindness that you did for me Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I've been saved. Please do not grieve, it must be you Who has this painful thing to do, We've been so close, we two, these years, Don't let your heart hold back its tears.
Robin Hooper, Veterinary Surgeon.

Woody
I sent this poem to my wife and was told not to send something like this again. She said she cried.
I bought her a Lassa two years ago and this dog goes everywhere with her. ( Best kid we have )

BTDT more than once. Never easy as your bud lies there in pain moments before the vet makes the first injection.

Thanks for posting this poem. My wife and I had to put are rottweiler of 11 yrs to sleep last month. We got her a month after we lost are son Peyton.. Her name was fancy. She helped us through the hardest time of are life. We felt like just giving up on life. But god gave us fancy to help ease are pain. She was such a good dog, and will always hold a special place in are heart. She was such a big spoiled baby, that loved to cuddle. She made us laugh so much. She was are kid..

I just reread this.. I’m getting ready to put down my cat Kasey Tuesday. He is 14 years old and has come down with toxoplasmosis and has thyroid problems.. He is not responding to treatments and has lost a lot of weight. He refuses to eat and barely drinks water. Breaks my heart but as the poem says I need to do this..

Sorry to hear that Woody, but at least we are able to do that for them and stop the pain and suffering before it gets too bad.

Got up this morning and Kasey had ate about half his canned food I left out for him. I gave him some fresh and he ate a little of that. This is the first time he has showed ANY interest in food since Friday. Not sure what to think..
He has been on the anti-biotic for 5 day’s now. Is it just now starting to work? False hope? I don’t know.. but we’ve decided to put off putting him down for two more days. One last chance...
Pray that we are making the right decision..

I couldn't put him down after watching him eat a little Tuesday morning. I told my wife one more trip to the vet to see what she says and treatment if necessary.
So we took Kasey to the vet yesterday. She said as long as he eats there is a good hope of him whipping it. She said that the antibiotic does take a little while to really do some good. He has been on it five and a half days now.
She gave him a B12 and an anti nausea Shot. She gave me one of the appetite booster pills to give to him this morning.
We came home yesterday and he went over and ate a few bites out of his dry food. He had not done that in way over a week. I gave him a few “snacks” and he ate a couple of those.
Last night and again this morning he ate well.
We were gone most of the day and when we came just a little while ago he had eaten all his canned food, half of his "snacks" and was chowing down on his dry food! That is way more than he has eaten in over a week!
He is way more alert and seems to be getting around better.
Prayers answered..

Tough decision but seems like the right one for now. Enjoy each day together! He is doing quite well.. eating like a horse and back to his old self. Needs to put on some weight. He doesn’t know how close he came to being planted in the backyard. He gets a thyroid pill once a day and the antibiotic twice a day. He is 14 so maybe this buys him a year or two.. who knows..
