Text for the Day -- Mark 11:15-17 ---------- Then they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling and those who were buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold doves; and he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. He was teaching and saying, 'Is it not written, "My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations"? But you have made it a den of robbers.'
Devotional ---------- The temptation often comes to turn religion into a financial gain endeavor rather than a vehicle for nurturing faith and life. The court of the Gentiles in the temple was to be a place of prayer for non-Jews. It had been turned into a business of buying and selling sacrifices. Essentially this act was saying it was not so important to reach out to the Gentiles and offer them an opportunity to be nurtured, or create sacred space for them, as it was to have a market place.
Prayer --------------------- Continue to cleanse your church, O Lord, when it strays. Amen
