Text for the Day -- Matthew 8:23-27 ---------- And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. A gale arose on the lake, so great that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him up, saying, 'Lord, save us! We are perishing!' And he said to them, 'Why are you afraid, you of little faith?' Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a dead calm. They were amazed, saying, 'What sort of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?'
Devotional ---------- What does Jesus expect? The disciples follow him into the boat. They set sail. A vicious storm comes up. The boat was being swamped. Jesus is sleeping through it. When the disciples wake him he says, "Why are you afraid, you of little faith?" Jesus seems to be implying that faith has something to do with not being afraid. Also implied, it seems to me, is the object of faith, namely God. Faith is trust that God is caring for me and ultimately my life is in God's hands. Jesus lived that out in a radical way. He invites you to do the same. There is risk in getting into the boat with Jesus.
Prayer -------------------- Build up my faith, Lord, that I may not be overcome with fear. Amen
WW- FAITH is not in knowing that God CAN, but in knowing that God WILL.
