I recently was looking for a generator for an older Coleman single mantel gas lantern. I went to Walmart, Kmart and a local sporting goods shop and no one had it. It seems most all the lanterns now days use LP bottles and don't need a generator. I ended up going to Gander Mountain and they had it. What really made me feel old was my neighbor who is 32 told me he had never seen a single mantel gas lantern like mine...lol h.h.

Has anyone ever used an old brass carbide lantern used by coal miner's? We used them when we fished for catfish, at night of course.

May be able to find some at a camping and outdoor supply specialty store. I haven't seen, wasn't really looking for it either, for a long time. The little town where I lived in Pa had it in the hardware store. Try to find a store like that today, probably easier to find a lantern.

Old Mister Coleman was one smart S.O.B. I'd rank the single mantle, white gas Coleman lantern as one of the single best sporting good inventions ever.
The white gas lanterns can be run considerably cheaper than the L-P type, plus you don't have a canister to throw out when you're done, so they are more environmetally friendly. Also, there is no better tool for blood trailing deer, than a good old Coleman lantern. Flashlights just don't cut it.
I'd like to have nickle for every on of those that Coleman sold.

I have an old colman type lantern (double mantle) that was "Army Issue".
It will run on white or "regular" gas. It has two fill holes for the tank, except one of the holes aint for filling.....it is a compartment that holds extra mantles and a small wrench.

I've got a double mantle, but not any extra pocket for mantles and matches.

Aren't the carbide lanterns dangerous if the carbide gets wet? I thought I remember reading that they can explode?
