Anti's Campaign to Sink Trapping in the Great Lake State- (03/30)
In Michigan
Michigan sportsmen should oppose recently introduced legislation to outlaw trapping. Anti-hunters, coming off a 2006 ballot issue victory that banned the state’s mourning dove hunt, are backing the legislation.
House Bill 4497, sponsored by Rep. Lorence Wenke, R-Richland, will ban foot hold traps. The strike is the next step in the antis’ efforts to demolish Michigan’s outdoor heritage. The bill awaits action in the House Committee on Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources.
“Last November, the anti-hunting community killed dove hunting in Michigan, and it is banking on momentum from that battle to help pass a statewide trapping ban,” said Rob Sexton, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance vice president for government affairs. “Michigan sportsmen must dominate the anti’s and send a torrent of messages to lawmakers opposing the effort to erode sportsmen’s rights.”
House Bill 4497 will eliminate a safe, humane tool for successful wildlife management and increase the risk of wildlife diseases, and property damage by nuisance wildlife.
Michigan citizens were primed for HB 4497 last fall when Fox Sports Net aired 15-second anti-trapping commercial, produced by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). It was shown in the Detroit-area and featured HSUS leader Wayne Pacelle and a second animal activist. The pair urged viewers to support trapping bans. After thousands of angry sportsmen sounded off to the network, it told the USSA that the ad would no longer run.
Take Action! Michigan sportsmen must resist the anti’s attack and stop the movement’s impetus. Ask state representatives to oppose HB 4497. To contact your lawmaker, call (517) 373-0135 or use the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org.
