Anti's Make Another Run at Nixing Maine Bear Hunt- (03/30) In Maine Maine sportsmen are being called to prevent lawmakers from axing bear hunting. The state’s hunters have defeated previous anti-bear hunting efforts, and must redouble efforts. House Bill 1144, sponsored by Rep. James Schatz, D-Blue Hill, will outlaw bear trapping. Voters rejected such a ban in 2004, and lawmakers upheld the voters’ decision in 2005 when they defeated a similar bill in committee. The current legislation awaits action in the Joint Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. “The grassroots efforts of Maine sportsmen have been key to legislative and ballot issue successes in the state,” said USSA President Bud Pidgeon. “This bill is the next attack in a firestorm against bear hunters, making immediate grassroots action vital to the future of the hunt.” Take Action! Don’t give up your hunting rights; Maine sportsmen should call their state representatives and put a stop to House Bill 1144. To contact your representative, call (207) 287-1400 or use the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org.
