I don't I just estimate the weight... unless it is a an early bow kill... then I take it to a butcher shop to so it can hang and they weigh it.

I would say most people guess or weigh them on a VERY inaccurate scales.
I quietly laugh to myself almost every time I hear a guy talk about the 200lb (or bigger) deer he killed.
Takes a special deer to weigh 200lbs dressed in the state of Indiana. I would guesstimate I have seen 4-5000 deer pass over a set of scales and only 1-2% of those have really weighed over 200lbs.

I saw four last year weighed on very accurate scales that was 200 field dressed and a little over. I Think a lot depends on what area a person hunts.

I would agree with that to an extent .... everything I have experience with is from Vincennes---> south.
I see a few every year that weigh 200+ ...... but it never fails .... I will have a friend pull up in my drive to show me the 220lb buck he just shot. When I take a look I see a 160-170lb buck with its necked all swelled up.
It takes more .... much more .... than a big neck to weigh 200+. Body length is much more important.
Its like golf ....... you cant shoot about a 75 any more than your deer can weigh about 200lbs. It either does or it doenst.

I have seen 4-5000 deer pass over a set of scales
Now that's a bunch of scale watching....
At 200 deer per year it would take 25 years to reach the 5000 mark....you ever take time out to hunt???

Dale Indiana ..... starting when i was 4 or 5 years old until I was 10 years old my cousin and I used to sit at the Tack-L-Shack and wait on our dads to get home from hunting each day during gun season.
Back in the late 70's and early 80's that place would have 2-300 deer a day for the first 3 or 4 days of season come through. Not all of them were weighed .... but many were.
The rest of the season wasnt quite so busy .... but still few hundred scattered over the 3 months of season.
My dad owned the Tack-L-Shack in the 70's and my cousin has lived right next door to it his whole life.
I have seen more than most go over a set of scales.
These days I dont see nearly as many .... maybe 20 deer or so a year on a scales I trust.
Yeah, I take plenty of time to hunt ....

On a side note .... we did see a 202lb doe once. A guy brought her to the station in the trunk of his Ford Granada .......

I'll vouch for the Tack-L-Shack. That is where almost everyone took their deer.. especially the big ones..to show off. In close to 40 years of deer hunting I guess I've taken 75 or more deer. I can think of only 3 that I killed that topped 200#. This buck topped out at 207# field dressed…It’s a big deer…

I have never killed a deer that goes 200lb.
Neither has my dad.
Neither has my cousin.
My uncle has ..... 2 of them.
That is about 250-300 deer between the 4 of us.
Of my friends .... I have personally seen 2 deer from everyone combined that went 200lbs or more.
I hear lots of stories each year about guys who have killed a 200 pounder ..... but of the thousands I have seen with my own eyes ...... not very many reach that magical mark.

I'll vouch for the Tack-L-Shack. That is where almost everyone took their deer.. especially the big ones..to show off. Yeah .... its a shame it is gone now. Back in its day it was a social gathering place during deer season. There would be trucks lining 231 with deer waiting to weigh and check in. My cousin and I would be sitting on the bench out front from open to close .... after we got old enough to actually hunt we would always hang out at the 'Shack between morning and afternoon hunts.

You had a lot of company. A lot of hunters when they got done hunting either went to to the Fox Tavern in Lynnville or the Tack-L-Shack in Dale to "look at the dead ones". Both places are no more..... .

TAKE A YOUNGSTER ON YOUR NEXT OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE.....turkey scout LOL... the weight of a deer is directly proportional to how far you have to drag it. My last deer I killed was about a 180 pounder but he weighed close to 250 by the time Woodmaster and myself (mostly Woodmaster) drug him 150 yards down a 10 foot deep ditch through water and mud.....

We had a place kinda like the Tack-L-Shack here.... It was Kelly's bait shop.... Everyone tookt hier deer there to check them in.... I remember my first deer I was so excited tot ake it there... They took your picture with the deer and hung it on "the wall of fame" and it stayed there until season was over... then you could come pick it up if you liked.... The year they closed me, my uncle, and two of my cousins all showed up there opening day, me and my cousins had all 3 killed 6 pointers and my uncle killed an 9... they hung up all the pictures side by side on the wall..... when we went to pick them up when season was over they were gone..... we did not find out until after my grandpa passed away that he had taken them and framed them all in a big frame with our names and the year and kept it in his top dresser drawer. (he was the one that taught each of us how to hunt) when he was creamated that picture was with him.....

............. Sorry didn't mean to hijack your thread. No, no... thank you for sharing your story. That is what hunting is about... family, friends and fellowship.. Over the years we have seemed to lose some of that....

Hanging scale in my mini-barn. Tested & adjusted each year. A few field dressed 200 pounders taken over the years.
