Noticed the other day that the Red Wings that I've had since 11/14/05 have started to tear out right above the heel cap on the right boot. ARRRGH!
These boots were replacements for a pair of RW's that I bought last March that had the heel cap stitching coming loose. I got a credit for the first pair, I'm reasonably sure I'll get a credit for this pair. The problem is that any thing under 3 months they generally replace free. I've had this pair for 5 months, but didn't wear them for around 1-2 months over the winter. Can't prove that though....
This particular pair of boots probably retails for ~$200. With the credit from my first pair, I paid around $140. The place I bought them at has little overhead (he's Amish), and sells them cheaper... Still, I've spent $180 on TWO pairs of boots in the last 13 months, and BOTH pairs aren't/weren't worth a CRAP in the longevity department.
Once I get a credit back on these boots, I'm officially DONE with Red Wings. I'm going back to Georgias; I had several good pairs of those boots.

I've always had great luck with Red Wing boots and will continue to buy them. Do you suppose that store you've been dealing with is selling factory "seconds". The store I buy from has factory second Red Wings, Carharts and other brands of stuff in a seperate room.

Nope, not seconds. I've thought about going to Hardy's up in Logansport, but would have no other reason to go there than that. So the 2 hour drive is pretty much out. He's Amish and has very little overhead because of the lifestyle. He sells Red Wings and Wolverines and a few other things. I have no problem with the owner, but will not buy another pair of Red Wings. If the company wants to replace my boots free of charge, that's fine. I'll wear them until they too come apart just like the last two have. The other problem I have is they take 2-3 weeks at a MINIMUM to get you an answer on what kind of credit you will recieve. Don't know about you fella's, but I *need* to have boots on every day I work, and I just simply can't afford a "back-up" pair.... I was wearing my old SHOES in the woods on opening weekend of shotgun season last fall because it took them over 2 weeks to get me an answer. I was planning on wearing those boots in the deer woods... Maybe I'm just too particular about my boots, I dunno. I feel like I should get over a year out of a pair, especially when I spend $100-150 on them. My feet should NOT hurt during the day while wearing them, and I wear them between 9-16 hours per day depending on what's going on at work that day. Other than the Dickies boots I screwed up and bought a while back, the Red Wings are at the bottom of the list as far as longevity. I got nearly two years out of each pair of Georgias I've had, as well as the one pair of Carolinas....

I have a pair of Irish Setter upland boots that are doing pretty well so far... One year on them and still going strong. they are made by Redwing. My grandfather swore by redwing.

Dad gave me a pair of ankle fit Setter's for Christmas. Haven't worn them much, and probably won't until deer season. I guess I'm a little worried about them holding up too....
Boots are like anything else, I guess. Different people swear by different brands.

Yeah, but the true test comes with work and hunting. If a brand can stand up to that abuse, then they will have me. This is my first go round with setters, so we'll see. I had a pair of Danner's that finally wore out. They are just so expensive. They do last forever though. My grandpa also swore by black and decker (he was a carpenter). He couldn't figure out why he was buying a drill every six months. LOL! He finally switched to Makita.

Danf,
I have a lot of luck with hy test boots. They are the most comfortable boots I have worn. The co. I work for gives us two free pair a year of what ever boots we want up to 100 dollers. I work indoors on concrete all day so dont know how they would hold up outside.

Thanks for the recommendation.
Comfort, fit, and longevity aside, the main thing I look for in a boot is the sole. It needs to be a sole that will give me traction in mud, wet grass, on gravel, etc, and also not wear out extremely fast from being on those surfaces and from jumping on a shovel.... Durashocks are out because of this. As a landscaper, I need a good sole! If I could only afford to try a pair of White's (last I checked they were $300++, but they are custom made to fit your feet).

I have a pair of Georgia boots taht I absolutely love! For work, I wear a pair of Wolverine shoes, and I love them too. I bought a pair of Dr. Scholls work shoes, and 3 months later the soles are cracked clear thru. No more Dr.'s for me!

I am strictly a rubber boot man with the LaCrosse Burley Aphas being the best I have worn. If I were an upland gamer I might wear leather, but for turkeys and deer you cant beat the Alphas.

If you hunt out west in the rocks, hills and mountains, rubber boots don't cut it. Had a wet day in Wyoming a couple years ago and things were very muddy, so I elected to wear my rubber knee high Burly's. Bad mistake, those things about crippled me. You need good, heavy duty, leather, hiking boots with good ankle support and hard, rugged, vibram soles.
For hunting around here, the rubber knee highs are all I ever wear, until it gets to about 20 degrees, then I break out the felt lined pack boots.

Rocky makes a darn good steel toe boot, i've been at Toyota for about 5 years now, the past 3 on two pair of Rocky boots. Rather light, cool camo and waterproof for those after work affairs.

I've had good luck with Herman Survivors over the years. Wow, I hadn`t heard of the Survivors forever, where do you find them today? I used to LOVE those boots. I know it doesn`t take too awful much to make you shy away from certain brands no matter what anyone else says or thinks, and especially when it is an expensive item. I`ve had really good luck though with the Rocky Gore-Tex boots, as well as the LaCrosse Burleys.

Took the boots back on Monday afternoon, had good timing as I won't be needing them for a few days since my son was born Tuesday (yesterday)!
I should have an answer on credit in a few weeks. Since my original start of this thread, the sole on the right boot had started coming un-glued under the ball of my foot, probably a 4"+ crack that had come un-glued.
