I can't vouch for this yet, but I picked this up off of another forum. Several there swear by them..
"I know alot of you have bought those little hand and feet warmers at Wal Mart or where ever. I work in the chemical field and I had a buddy of mine tell me about a cheap way to make those things and you can re-use them over and over again.
If you'll take a couple of bricks of charcoal (don't get the instant light kind) get the kind that you have to add lighter fluid too and ground it up real fine. Take hammer to it is the best way I've found. Once you get the charcoal ground up, put it in a heavy duty ziplock bag and pour 5 tablespoons of vinegar in the bag. If you use 4 charcoal bricks, you'll need 10 spoons of vinegar. It should mix together and then solidify pretty quickly. Put that in your hunting pack and the next time you need a handwarmer, just bust it up and the acid in the vinegar will react with the charcoal and produce a nice hand warmer or foot warmer that will last 25 times longer than the ones you buy. The good thing about these is if you'll add vinegar after every couple of uses, you can use over and over again.
I've had some warmers that I've used all season and spent less than a $1 on them....
Give it a try next time your bored!"

That sounds like it is well worth a try. Cheap enough to experiment on.

I wonder if that would work with lump charcoal , or does it require briquettes ? I have both at home , I'll see if it works .

Well guys I tried it and the concoction never even set up it just stayed a giant soggy black mess. I used 4 charcoal briquettes crushed to a fine powder and 10 Tbsp. of vinegar. Mixed it all in a zip-lock bag and let it sit sealed for 24 hours, when that didn't work I let it sit for another 24 hours with the bag open. Has anyone else gave it a try yet?

I tried it. Had pretty much the same results- nothing but a black, soggy mess. parson

Maybe they meant teaspoons?

They must have meant teaspoons because I got the same result with both the briquettes and lump charcoal . Camby , Santa left me some coal , but it wasn't charcoal ...

I prefer to use my own method of warmth for cold weather hunting.
I use a turkey hunting seat with the short legs and lean against a tree. I then take a tarp or a camo blanket and wrap around me.
Between my knees I place a Sterno can and light it and close the blanket around me. That is a very ot flame and keeps you warm even on a windy day.
If you are worried about the open flame try this one.
I used to carry a few briquettes of self-starting charcoal in a ziploc baggie. Same scenario as before with stool and a tree. Except this time I dig a small hole about 6" in diameter and 6" deep. I place in 6 of the briquettes and light them. Then lay 2 sticks on the side of the hole down to the charcoal and wait for the flames to subside and the coals to show. Then cover the charcoal with the dirt and pack it down hard. Then remove the 2 sticks to create air vents. This way the ground is heated and it heats you in return. Both of these methods provide many hours of heat. The Sterno is just easier.

I've considered the same idea Singleshooter , but I didn't allow for the vent holes in my thinking . No wonder it didn't work ! (smacks forehead)
