Three DNR nature preserves will allow deer hunting
--------------------------------------------------
Three nature preserves, Conrad Savannah (453 acres) in Newton County and Wabash
Lowlands and Section Six Flatwoods (combined acreage of 674 acres) in Posey
County will be open for deer hunting during the 2006 deer firearms and 2006 deer
muzzleloader seasons.
The DNR will hold a drawing to limit the number of hunters each day for the
first three days of firearms season. Twelve hunters will be drawn for each day
for Conrad Savanna and a total of ten hunters will be drawn for each day at the
combined Wabash Lowlands and Section Six Flatwoods.
During the remainder of the firearms season and the entire muzzleloader season,
DNR will not limit the number of hunters.
Applications for the first three days of hunting during the firearms season at
the preserves are available at Willow Slough, LaSalle and Hovey Lake fish and
wildlife areas.
Applications are also available at:
dnr.in.gov/press/deer-app.pdf
Forms must be submitted no later than 4 p.m. on Oct. 13. These special
exceptions to DNR nature preserve rules apply only to Conrad Savanna, Wabash
Lowlands and Section Six Flatwoods.
The goal of nature preserve deer reduction hunts is to help restore and maintain
the preserve's ecological balance. Over-browsing of native vegetation on these
three preserves indicates local deer populations have grown too large.
Wabash Lowlands and Section Six Flatwoods nature preserves are hard to find.
Some local roads are unmarked and seasonal. Visit the nearby Hovey Lake FWA
office during business hours for up-to-date directions and a map.
A map of Conrad Savannah NP is available at LaSalle FWA or Willow Slough FWA
offices. A map of Conrad Savannah can also be downloaded from:
