We got a new cashier at work earlier this year, a woman named Kris. She was always quiet and shy. People didn't know what to make of her at first. We soon figured out that she was pretty cool, however, and I always made a point to yell, "KRIS! What's happenin?" whenever she walked by, and eventually she would talk first once and a while. When I left work this morning for the last time before Christmas, I was glad to see her, and hollered,
"Merry Christmas!" I picked up some last minute gifts, a pair of fancy scissors for the wife and a ball for my boy.
While I was loading the bags in the Jeep, griping about the cold wind, I heard the wail of sirens. "Lord, let everyone be ok,"
I remember thinking.
As I pulled out onto Highway 62, I saw the flash of numerous red and blue lights at the next intersection. As I stopped for the red light I saw a crumpled VW bug in the intersection, and the ruin of a white sedan in the ditch, and emergency workers swarming all around it. The road was covered by a lot of small debris. It looked like the white car got hit turning left across the highway.
I was still waiting to go when I was shocked to see a co-worker, another cashier, being led from the wreck by still more emergency personnell. At the time, I was thinking that someone else rode with her.
I found out tonight that two other co-workers were in the car. One was busted up pretty good, but ok, the other one, Kris,
Was in the passenger seat and took the brunt of the impact.
She was killed.
I like to remember the same smile that she always gave me when I said hi, the one I saw when I said, "Merry Christmas."
Be nice to people today! You never know if there will be another chance. I am sad for all the times I could have been nice and was not.
