The kids' season.... He's chomping on the bit to get out- wants to check his tree stand, get his gear ready.... maybe the best part of the youth season is getting our young 'uns to do all the prep work for us. He evne wants to get the clothes washed in scentless soap and hung outside. I declare a specialyouth season on homework. Only kids can do it and it must be done before he /she hunts!

Isn`t it great to see the kids excited about hunting, and not about being in front of the tube with the PS2?

I'm glad you're enforcing the homework rule. Too many kids these days are TAUGHT to be slackers by their parents. There will still be plenty of time to hunt. Good job!

Yep, then the people who are actually supposed to TEACH them have to deal with the laziness and apathy. So many of the kids want it handed to them on a platter and don't want to work for it.... It's a youth season, but that doesn't mean it's a *right*.

We checked the zero on his slug gun last Sunday, this will be his firt year useing a climbing tree stand and he has been practicing ALOT with it.
He's already got his fanny pack, packed his clothes are ready and he goes over it all EVERYDAY!
As for Indiana having the very first ever "youth deer hunt"
Better late than NEVER

Too bad the ADULTS wouldn't allow the kids to harvest a buck if they got a chance.....really selfish if you ask me.
Anyway, I've still got a few spots left on two tracts in the SW area if anyone's needing a spot. Free to those who ask.

I put mounts and scope on my neighbors son's new slug gun last evening. we too talked about how selfish it was for the organization that whined so loud to the DNR not to allow kids to shoot a buck on youth weekend. The leaders of this organization should stand up and take a bow. Most likely their kids are grown so it wasn't something they were going to participate in anyway.
Wont that make a kid really happy if a nice buck steps out and they cant shoot it. Its sad when selfish greed for a set of antlers clouds the vision of some. h.h.

I think one of them saw it as a chance to remove some does from his private area and still make it appear that he was doing something great for mankind. Actually, he just wanted the kids to do what his buddies are reluctant to do, that's manage the herd for balance instead of for antlers.

My 12 y.o. and I are doing final prep and target practice this weekend, and he's rearing to go. I'm looking forward to seeing him experience deer camp and the weekend group hunting experience. Since we usually just day hunt on our farm or on local properties, he's never had the overnight/camp experience, so that will be a first for him...
Even with the antlerless restriction, it's still a great opportunity for the kids to learn orienteering, tracking and hunting skills in an environment where they are the center of the effort. I've seen situations in normal hunting groups where some folks kids are relegated to "tagging along" with the group of adults, i.e. the kid gets to carry a gun, but the adult gets to take the first shot kind of thing...
If this year is a success, they may open it up next year for bucks...
BTW, dads/moms... don't forget to get/pack that combo youth hunting license if your youth hunter is not hunting on your own property... don't want to put a damper on things by making a drive somewhere and find out the tag got left on the frig at home.... and bring that digital camera...
Good luck to all next weekend!!! Have a great, safe hunt with your kids...

Too bad the ADULTS wouldn't allow the kids to harvest a buck if they got a chance.....really selfish if you ask me. Yes!! I said that in the beginning!....But it's no big secret that some folks were against a youth deer hunting weekend, to begin with...lol Then you hear that it being antlerless only will open up all kinds of land......the hunt is basically here and I aint seeing all kinds of unlimited opportunities, are you?..is it just walk in where ever you please?...lol I'm glad the state did FINALLY see the need for a hunt like this, better late than never.

Well I am very excited. My son has decided to go with his bow instead of a shotgun. Stated he's shot his share with a gun and doesn't need to shoot one early with it. Actually, He's never shot a doe, so he's pumped,(two bucks and two buttons). In truth, I'd like to get a friend of his whose never hunted to go with us. The down side... I have a huge coaching conflict all day Saturday. If nothing else, we might use the day for an armed walk on the farm to check stands and move/ add a few. If he sees a deer- he can fling an arrow or my bet- give in on the bow talk and get his gun back out. Scott

My son has two freinds that have told me that they will have their hunters ed card by this time next year and wanted to know if they could go. I'll do everything I can do to get them in on the hunt.
Right now we have 3 father & child combos going and possibly a 4th.
It's gonna be a great time!

you all are getting my boy(13) so pumped up he will be on his second deer season this year he is out to get one with his bow. he took a great turkey two years ago 23# 11" and 1 1/4 spurs. out did his old man. he got that turkey cause i let him miss half a day of school but i told him he must have good grades to do so. he was holding an A avg. so i figured on afternoon out school wouldnt hurt man that turkey was awesome. he had a shot at his first deer last year but did not take it cause he did not think he could make a clean kill. he is a very good up and coming hunter. best of luck to all dads and kids who hunt together
