Terre Haute goes batty on August 11------------------------------------ Experts from around the Great Lakes region are converging on Indiana State University in Terre Haute to promote bat conservation this Aug. 11. The Indiana State University Center for North American Bat Research and Conservation, and The Organization for Bat Conservation, are sponsoring the sixth Annual Great Lakes Bat Festival. The festival will include bat programs for kids and presentations about the benefits of bats, bat houses, bat research, bat conservation, public health and more. The event will feature live bat programs with local insect-eating bats and large flying fox bats from Africa. The ISU Bat Center will also introduce its first publication, Bats of Indiana. Presentations will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the ISU Hulman Memorial Student Union. An evening family-style barbecue will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dobbs Park on the eastern edge of Terre Haute. After the barbeque, bat experts will demonstrate how bat research is conducted from 8 to 10 pm. At the park, bat researchers will demonstrate bat netting, radio tagging, bat detectors and light tagging. Festival events are free, except for the evening barbecue, which costs $6 per person. LOL Duff..... I would love it if there was some woods or something to run around in.... I grew up in a town that was 6 blocks by 6 blocks and I loved it there.... surrounded by woods and I had permission for all of it.

Reminds me of the small town in the Texas hill country I grew up in...on a particular stretch of one of the outer roads there was the largest bat population in North America (at least when I lived there--it may have been beaten by some other set of caves by now)! We used to see clouds of bats every night flying in the sky over the house getting to their caves--that was cool and something I haven't seen anywhere else.
