Chemical Depot Announces Handicapped Deer Hunting Days
Newport, Ind. - There will be a deer hunt for handicapped hunters on the Newport Chemical Depot the weekends of Nov. 4 - 5 and Nov. 11 -12. A limited number of handicapped hunters will be drawn to participate.
Eligible hunters must be at least 18 years old, possess a Hunter With a Disability Permit issued by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, pass a background check, pay a $5 per hunter per weekend user fee and be accompanied by at least one but not more than two non-hunting helpers who also must pass a background check. A mandatory Safety/Security meeting will be held Sept. 30 on the depot at 8 a.m. No hunting or weapons will be allowed on Sept. 30.
Both archery and firearms hunting will be allowed. Permitted deer hunting equipment include the following types of weapons legal for deer hunting in Indiana: archery equipment, crossbows, shotguns and muzzleloaders. Only one weapon will be allowed per hunter, therefore each hunter must apply for either archery or a firearms hunt on one or both weekends. Two deer may be harvested with archery equipment, and two deer may be harvested with firearms. Whether hunting archery or firearms, the first deer harvested must not have antlers. Hunters must use a combination of state deer hunting and/or military-refuge deer licenses (resident or non-resident, as applicable) or an Indiana lifetime license. Bonus county licenses are not valid for the depot hunts.
Hunting 2-2-2
The second deer may be with or without antlers. If an antlered deer is taken, it will not be counted toward the "one antlered deer per hunter for a combination of regular archery, firearms and muzzleloader licenses" state regulation.
Each person participating must also possess a cell phone without photo or video capabilities. Applications must be received no later than Sept. 26. Applications, local law enforcement agency check forms and further information may be downloaded at www.cma.army.mil/newport.aspx (scroll to the "highlights" section at the bottom of the page) or picked up at the Newport Chemical Stockpile Outreach Office, 140 S. Main St., Newport, Ind. from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information regarding the deer hunt, call Phil Cox at (765) 245-4324.
