Student charged for writing violent essay
High school senior says he was just following the assignment CARY, Ill. - Authorities have filed a second disorderly conduct charge against a high school senior arrested for writing an essay officials described as disturbing and inappropriate.
Allen Lee, 18, of Cary was arrested earlier this week after penning the essay at his northern Illinois high school. Lee contends he was just following the creative writing assignment he was given in class at Cary-Grove High School.
Lee initially faced just one charge, but an amended complaint filed Thursday cited a second passage.
According to the complaint, the essay reads, in part, "Blood, sex and booze. Drugs, drugs, drugs are fun. Stab, stab, stab, stab, stab, s...t...a...b...puke. So I had this dream last night where I went into a building, pulled out two P90s and started shooting everyone, then had sex with the dead bodies. Well, not really, but it would be funny if I did."
Another passage said, "as a teacher, don't be surprised on inspiring the first CG shooting," the complaint said.
The creative writing assignment in Lee's English class on Monday instructed students to "write whatever comes to your mind. Do not judge or censor what you are writing," according to a copy of the assignment.
"In creative writing, you're told to exaggerate," Lee said. "It was supposed to be just junk. ... There definitely is violent content, but they're taking it out of context and making it something it isn't."
Lee has been removed from school, and District 155 spokesman Jeff Puma said the district is evaluating Lee's punishment while he attends an offsite learning program in the school district.
"It wasn't just violent or foul language," Puma said. "It went beyond that."
Lee's attorney, Dane Loizzo, said his client was within the parameters of the assignment.
"A stream of consciousness seems to be the goal of the assignment," Loizzo said. He said Lee has never been disciplined in school and signed Marine enlistment papers last week.
His father, Albert Lee, has defended his son as a straight-A student who was just following instructions and contends the school overreacted. However, Albert Lee has said he understands the situation because of what happened last week at Virginia Tech when student Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 students and faculty members before committing suicide.
The charges against Lee could result in a possible $1,500 fine and up to 30 days in jail if he is convicted.
Cary is about 40 miles west of Chicago.
I can see why they're upset, However, he did what the assignment said. I thinks it's a little overkill to have him arrested. Why weren't his parents just called in to discuss it with him and his teachers?

It would be irresponsible to not have it looked into, along with send a message to this kid. Secondly-what a disturbed kid. Just following the assignment? He`s a twisted little punk.

Not saying what he wrote was not wrong, but This kid really needs to be looked at,maybe counseling ?I know Disorderly conduct has always been used as a catch all ,but have never heard of it being used for something written.

Off the top of my head... Emmanuel Kant was a real ant who was very rarely stable. Heidigger Hiedigger was a boozy begger who could drink you under the table. David Hume could out consume Schopenhaue & Hegel And Wittgenstein was a beery schwein who was twice as sloshed as Schlegel There wasn't nothin Nitzche couldn't teach ye 'bout the raisin' of the wrist Socrates himself was permenantly ed... John Stewert Mill of his own free will on half a bottle of chantilly was particularly ill Plato they say, could stick it away, half a bottle of whiskey every day Atistotle Aristotle was a bugger for a bottle Camus was fond of his dram Renes Decart was a drunken fart, I Drink therefore I am!

I saw that and I'm uncomfortable with him being charged as well. Look into his mental health, OK but charging him sets too scary a precedent for me. I'm getting real tired of the nanny state this country has become and the sheep who are more than willing to let it go in that direction.

A clear and very frightening violation of his First Amendment rights, the ACLU will be on this one like a dog on a ham bone, I hope they win. If crap like this is allowed to continue goobermint sanctioned book burning will be next.

What should they do with Stephen King?? parson The writings of Stephen King, while disturbing in many instances, are hardly the same as writing about the desire, and even the possibility of committing mass murder, then having sex with the corpses-not to mention the difference-King is an adult writer, this kid is a product of a culture in which rap incites it`s cult to the very same things that this boy wrote about-Killing police, treating women like livestock, and a general disregard for anyone else as an aside. The First Amendment has limits-can`t yell fire in a crowded theater, etc, and was never intended to protect this kind of crap to begin with-it was intended to allow the citizenry to freely voice their expectations of the way their government should be run, as well as allow for freedom of worship. It was never intended to protect such trash as pornography or the filthy rap. Music and film are very powerful media, they can illicit tears, hope, rage-the emotions they can stir run the gamut-and freedom of expression certainly should be protected, unless and until they promote violence and mayhem against others. The British had the very same dilemma to wrestle with when they had to clamp down on the muslim extremists who were meeting publicly and attempting to generate Jihads to further the radical agenda of killing all non-muslims. The First Amendment isn`t without limitations, and especially today, when so many, such as the killers at Columbine, and now Virginia Tech, gave fair warning of the evil they were capable of, in writings very similar to the sick essay from this student.

He's free to write what he wants, but the institution should be free to say, "What a sick s.o.b.! let him excercise his free speech someplace else." Jail is a little much, but he should be put out of school. There should be no tolerance for nutty B.S. Besides, the kid is eighteen . When you hit eighteen, you are accountable for what you do. how stupid is he to do that right after a mass killing at a college?
Free Speech does not protect me if I write a letter to the President asserting my desire to kill him and take sexual liberties with his corpse, nor does it protect me if I write wierd threats at work. It should not, nor was it ever meant to, protect insane, violent ramblings, at school or anyplace else.

Sounds to me as though he was well inside the directions given for the assignment.
I thought he might be pushing it in going overboard intentionally to make his point with the teacher.
Absolutely no reason to arrest the kid!
On what grounds, wirting something "disturbing" in a writing assignment to wirte something without any limitations or self-censorship?
Are the Busch brothers then to blame for inspiring tailgaters on the interstate to nudge the car ahead in a corner so they can pass while he spins? Should Jimmy Johnson be arrested for inspiring mass violations of air quality laws in his open burning of tires and needless fuel waste?
This matter should be dropped immediately and an apology issued in writing to the kid and forwarded to the Marine Corps before the arrest can screw up his chances at serving the country. He followed orders, and was double-crossed when he did it too well.

My earlier Stephen King reference was in semi-jest. We have all grown up with a measure of mayhem and maiming in film & literature, but those of my generation (59 years old) and before, digested such in a context of established boundaries. I actuallu enjoyed (still do) the 3 stooges, yet have never poked out one single eye! I knew that swift and certain punishment would result if I crossed the line. When uncertain where the "line" was, I tended to err on the side of caution.
Any trip to a public place will illustrate that most kids are growing up without such defined and enforced boundaries. "Time out" just doesn't work, but the "board of education applied to the seat of learning" still reaps results.
I understand that the problem is complex, but lack of consistant discipline in a loving environment is a major contributor. parson

That kid doesn't need to be charged with anything, he needs to have his azz beaten. Put the azz beatings back in the schools and a lot of these problems will go away.

The kid, AND his parents apparently, have some issues. Criminal charges are bs and are simply a grab for dollars by riding on the VT coat tails. btw, is it written somewhere that all killers and sicko's are of lower mentality? I thought the real sick ones were normally of higher intelligence. Kid simply needs his tail feathers warmed up in public for starters.
Biggest problem with the las couple of generations is absolutely NO sense of humility or embarrassment. And it shows.

I bet your parents and grandparents would have said the same thing about your generation. Imagine one of those sicko rock and roll singers shaking his hips on TV.
That is like saying "the problem with hunters these days is they are all in it for killing animals." Might be true for some, just a small minority but most certainly not the majority.

Does that somehow make the statement false? Since when did a statement have to cover EVERY SINGLE member of a group to be accurate? I know a lot of good kids. I never meant to imply otherwise. If I somehow came off sounding like the last two generations were WHOLLY without merit, that was not my intent. We have always had bad kids, and my comment can be boiled down to 'we have more really bad apples than we used to'. I know a lot of little misfit freaks that will never have a sense of anything but self.

Very true, but I had the same reaction as Decatur when I read the story. It seemed like overkill to subject the kid to disciplinary actions for writing a general story with these themes; if the kid had written "I will kill ______" or "I will shoot on _____" or something more specific, I could see the clear cause for disciplinary actions. If this kid was required to undergo a psych eval or treatment for writing this essay, he would be facing consequences with the potential of being punishing for him which might deter him from writing such essays in the future, and a message would be sent to the kid and parents that this is unacceptable behavior. From the story alone, it seems that it could just as likely be a kid who is calling out for help from parents and teachers who don't seem to care as it could be a little brat trying to cause trouble...
