What ever happened to the telephone deer check-in idea? Wasn't the IDNR thinking about going to this instead of check in stations? h.h.

Man, I wouldlove to see tele-check and internet check in. The current system is inconvenient for the hunters, costly for the DNR to administer, and probably a pain for the check in station operators also, as it doesn't put much $ in their pocket.
Probably too simple and easy for the government to embrace.

I don`t think the check-in station operators get any compensation for doing that, and it is a pain, especially if you`ve made a kill late in the day and everyone is closed. Aren`t you worried though about the abuse that could occur with a call-in or internet check-in? I know abuse goes on anyway, but I`m really afraid that this would make it more prevalent.

I think poachers are going to poach regardless of how the rules work. Laws only apply to the law abiding citizens. Why not make it convenient?

The check-in station at our local store love the business it draws in though. They say it mores than pays for the work they have to do.

Tele check may be a good thing.I think this would maybe cause more hunters to report their Kills. I was told during last season that more than a few kills are not reported because one reason being no check station being available for late evening kills. In Some areas hunters must drive many miles out of there way to even find a check station.

I see a lot of deer get checked in at the Sportsman's Lodge in Decatur, and most people get their tag and go. I don't see how they could make much money off of the work they do checking in deer. Most places do it for the free advertising as well as the ability to be helpful to hunters. It definately looks like more of a pain than a gold mine!

The problem is this. It's early October and 70 degrees. You shoot a deer on Sunday evening and don't get your deer out of the field until after all the check in stations are closed. You need to get the hide off the critter and get it cooled down, and you have to go to work in the AM first thing, so that isn't an option for check in. So what do you do? Leave it in back of your truck all night with bag ice in some half azzed attempt to cool the meat?
In my opinion, it's more of a crime to mishandle good meat, than it is to blow off a check in, so I'd have a real hard time giving anyone guff about that, and might even forgoe the check in myself in such a pinch.
Tele-check and internet check in would cure this problem in a hurry. I've hunted several states where you don't even check them in, and don't see that Indiana is gaining a bunch of knowledge with the present system.

Telecheck started here in Illinois last year. Our gas station was a check sation for archery/muzzleloader/late season previously. This spring they closed. They lost too much income from the loss of the folks checking in. Buisinesses locally need the income from hunting season to counter the leaner months. The check in brought buisiness to the town and that no longer happens. Our gas station closed down and our restaraunt is not far behind.
The only ones benefitting from the lack of check in stations is the DNR. I guess they are saving money by doing this. It's killing small buisinesses though.

I know the deer in my woods love the check int he way it is. I will everything walk on an early evening bow hunt unless it is a mounter because all the check ins are closed and I don't wanna have to bother with it in the morning. My time to hunt is limited with school and work so I really don't want to miss a mornign hunt or cut a hunt short just to take a deer in to have it checked that I killed the night before.

I think quite a few Kentuckians don't like it as they say it is easier to cheat.
I think a cheater is a cheater he will cheat either way.
Our present paper tags makes it easier to cheat too, but I don't think those are going away.
I know that when Woodmaster and myself check in our deer from KY it is a BUNCH easier for us to check our deer in as we don't have to run all over Owensboro to find a place open. Just wait till we get home or place the call on our cell phones.

Yes to telecheck . Most of the time my local check station doesn't even go outside and look at the deer , so what's the point of a physical check in ?

Tele-check in Ky is great. No roadtrips & no waiting in line to check-in your critter.

I like to drive by the local check station and see the deer that are brought in. If we go to tele-check how will the people see all the deer we kill.

Currently in Indiana an in person "check in" is PART OF THE HUNT. If you don't have time to complete the hunt, you shouldn't be out there. This is one of the reasons I never hunt on Sunday evenings.

I'd go for the tele-check. It would save me 1-1.5 hours time and $5-6 in gas.
I guess I don't have a criminal mind, what cheating would be easier?

As I understand it - The tele-check (hopefully on-line too) would be in addition to the in person check ins. You could take your choice. Since mine is on the way home I'd probably stop and check it in - if he was open. . .
