According to Charlie E on Deer and Deer hunting the northern rut will start around the 20th of Oct with the pre, then the seek will run until roughly Nov 6 with the chase phase from about the 6th to around the 12th. Then firearms comes in the 18th. Since Charlie lives in New York south of Buffalo and east of Penn's. I think I will accept his since it is closer to my geographic area. But that is full of interesting graphs. Just wish I understood a graph better.

The the beginning of the 2nd week of November has always been the best in my neck of the woods. These dates coincide with my observations in my area. by the middle of November, deer in my hunting area are in lockdown

The best time to be in the woods for me has roughly been the 4th, 5th and 6th of November give or take a day.

Here is another good question for you? If the first week of Nov. is usually the best (1-7), the second shows slowing down (8-14) and by the third (15- 21) most deer are in a lock down why does so many people harp on the Indiana firearms season being in the middle of the rut?

I've always believed that the peak of the rut in Warrick county is about November 10th. It starts tailing off after that. The gun season can be anywhere from the 12th to the 18th. That can catch some of the rut, but not all of it. Usually by the time the fireram deer hutners have tagged out or quit the rut is basically over. That is one reason that you will see the numebr of does killed go up later on in the firearm season. Kentucky patterns their gun season to coincide with the rut. That is why their firearm season comes in a week earlier than ours this year. (YIPPEE!). The first Illinois gun season catches part of the rut too. Most of the proponents want the gun season moved completely away from anything that resembles a rut - like December. The reason given - "Big bucks are more vulnreable during the rut." It seems that they are not content to protect the yearlings, but also want to protect the big bucks. That is NOT what QDM is all about.

Woody, that is exactly what I meant. Usually only the first weekend hits the rut and then only the tail end, similar to the much vaunted Ill first 4 days. You used to be able to find the totals for both states but lately I have not been able to find Ill's. But suffice it to say they are actually similar in the totals for the first week and usually for the entire season as to the buck kill.

I cant find the Illinois numbers either. I'll look a little harder later.
Most of the states with the shorter and/or out of rut deer seaosn have comparable numbers to ours.
My opinion on a shorter gun season is that people will be quicker to drop that young buck. Looking at the numbers by day of the season it would make more sense to lengthen the season as more does are taken the latter part .
The antler growing proponents look at these other states and then cherry pick what suits them and rejects others in applying it to THEIR scheme of things.

In my area.. I notice bucks FOLLOWING does during the THIRD week of October .. I then notice more scrape checking activity during the LAST week of October ... The actual chase is NORMALLY heavy the FIRST week of November and from that FIRST week on, I would NOT recommend applying "doe-in-heat" to your body or carrying a "bleat can" carelessly in your pocket unless you want to try convinving a buck YOU HAVE A HEAD ACHE !!! I have alwats had a saying, "I ALWAYS MAKE AN EFFORT TO BE IN THE TREESTAND ALL DAY LONG NOVEMBER 15.." Personally, I have shot more QUALITY BUCKS on November 15 while they were sniffing the scent of a HOT DOE .. GOOD HUNTING.. Bud Fields

Bud- I agree with you on the opening day of firearms which is like the 18th this year it is best to sit in your stand until 11:30 or even 1:00 P.M. if you can and get out of family obligations. Such as the Grandkids soccer, football games. Missing them is a good way to end up sleeping on the couch or in the recliner for a couple of weeks. My reason is simple the thousands of firearms opening weekend hunters are crunching thru the brush moving the deer. Bucks that get disturbed from their beds figure if they can't sleep they will look for breed able doe.
Disturbance causes commotion which causes motion which in turn depending upon where you are means more chances of seeing a decent animal.
