You would be surprised what you can come out of unscathed with gun failures.
Most handgun detonations cause very little hand damage.
Where people get hurt is in a total breech failure when you have a good cheek weld.

Yeah, I had a buddy once get some snow in his shotgun. Not much, maybe had a blockage at the end 1/4" thick. We were just about finished rabbit hunting and were walking back in the direction of the truck, when he stumbled and his old single shot caught the top of a snow drift. Now, my buddy was the original Larry the Cable guy. Almost looked like him too. Anyway, I told him he had some snow in the barrel, and he better blow it out. By that I MEANT break open the action, pull the shell out and BLOW through it. I heard him cock the hammer back, and hollered 'Whoa!" I explained what would happen if he fired it. He laughed and said something to the effect 'right'. . . . He did at least hold the gun out away from him when he shot it. It did not produce the effect as shown in the photo, but it ruined a perfectly good barrel. The last inch or so was still round, but a 12-15" long section resembling a hot dog when it gets too hot and splits was left. To say the look on his face will be forever etched into my memory is putting it mildly. We were only teenagers, but still . . . Bore obstructions should be something you understand before you ever get to shoot a gun.

U guys mythbusters fans ?
They tried and tried to get a gun to do this and only came close by using an old demascus barreled gun ?
Entertainment if nothing else.

I saw them try to produce a "Robin Hood" with arrows too. They couldn't do that either. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, I've seen it. Entertainment is right.

U guys mythbusters fans ? They tried and tried to get a gun to do this and only came close by using an old demascus barreled gun ? Entertainment if nothing else. One of the problems with the Mythbusters proceedure was to SOLIDLY plug the barrel. To get the barrel to " " you have to have a vectored increase of pressure on a declining curve... In otherwords - an obstruction that will move forward along with the projectile in front of the pressure spike so the split in the metal will propagate linerally rather than just bursting. The bore site was probably the most perfect way of achieveing this. Bullet hits the near-bore-diameter rod, causing a micro-second pressure spike that begins to rupture the barrel at 1-X many points circumferentially. At the same instant, the boresight begins to move forward, allowing the bullet & trapped gas to "zipper" behind the forward motion, creating 1-X many longetudinal splits. When the bullet & pressure front exits the crown & seperates the metal at the crown, it blows the "petals", created by the splits, apart. But then, Mythbusters is not really so much about science as getting to blow stuff up for fun.

They are somewhat entertaining, but not at all factual or correct. I am no brain child, but I have seen several instances fo where they have absolutely come to the wrong conclusions because of faulty assumptions and testing conditions. I promise you, that one of their 'debunked' myths will get someone seriously hurt, and said someone will get a VERY large check, and the show will be 'debunked' for good. In fact, since saying that I am wishing I had taken notes. . . Anyone got copies of that show handy? ;D

What about the mythbusters episode where they tried to duplicate the famous Carlos Hathcock shot through the scope kill! The only way they could get it done was with 30-06 armor piercing rounds.

My boyfriend absolutely swears by ANYTHING that's on Mythbusters!! You'd think they were the ultimate purveyors of truth the way he thinks and talks about them--and you can't convince him otherwise! Plus this Columbus East graduate doesn't like that one of those Mythbusters guys apparently graduated from Columbus North...

I was thinking of Mythbusters when I started to read this. I remember we had a long talk about it on here. Some truely believed this is a fact now. That the only way to damage a barrel is to weld a piece of rod down in it.
I told them they are free to make up their own minds, but me I will make sure to the best of my abilities that my barrel is free of mud, snow, wedged shot cups no matter what those hollywood guys say or "proved". I know of 2 cases where a barrel has been peeled back and I have only been on this world 31 yrs. I don't need them telling me what is likely to happen or not.
I do really like watching the show, just don't take it for gospel.
