Anyone else seen the new movie 300 yet? I`ve seen it twice already-great flick. If you`re like me, and really enjoy the Gladiator, Conan The Barbarian, Knights of the Round Table type films, you`ll have to have this on DVD today-just like me. The battle scenes are excellent, and it`s really a Greek Marine flick, in which they stress the virtues most of us understand, and cherish-valor, integrity, honor, defending what you believe in and love, even if it means dying for it. Special effects are awesome, the plot has enough twists to keep your interest until the battle begins, and when the Greeks face off against the Persians, you`ll have a hard time not rooting out loud for them. Remember the line-“then we`ll fight in the shade”. Even a villain back at the castle-one you`ll LOVE to hate, especially when his justice comes. Be sure to listen closely to what the queen tells him. Great flick-I`d be interested in hearing if anyone else enjoyed it as much as I did.

My friends have all seen, and loved it. I on the other hand was turned off by the commercials for the movie, as well as the fact that it was filmed entirely in front of a green screen. I'm sure I'll watch it when it comes out on DVD.

I thought it was ok, but not fantastic. Like Gladiator only not as good, but still not bad.

I have not seen it, though your review makes it sound worthwhile. I do not know how historically accurate it is.... probably not very. It can still be a good flick though, I guess.
It is no wonder the persians suffered greatly when tryng to get through the pass at Thermopylae. The Spartans were very well armored, and had strong shields of wood with a bronze covering. The Hoplites would simply interlock their shields and poke at the hapless Persians through the gaps. The heavy Spartan spears went right through whatever armor the persians had, typically very light.
You would enjoy the History channel show about the 300 that hs aired recently.
I bet if the Persians had known how strange Greeks were, they'd have been struggling to go in the opposite direction.

Wow-you seem to know a lot about the whole thing. And is it still showing on the History Channel? I`d love to see that.

LOL...my boyfriend loves Gladiator and Braveheart and movies of that genre, so we went to see 300 the weekend it opened, even though war movies are not typically my favorites to see. He seemed to like it, but I got kind of bored of seeing people's heads chopped off and bodies mutilated after a while and actually fell asleep for 45 minutes in the theatre leaning on his shoulder while he watched. I thought the special effects were great and the plot line of defending what you believe in and being noble was just fine, but I kind of felt like I was seeing the same scene over and over again. I guess you can say I got the boyfriend back by wanting to see "Bridge to Terabithia" (my absolute favorite book growing up, and still one of my favorite stories of all time!) the weekend it opened and making him sit through that!! ;D

Haven't seen this new movie, but I remember seeing the original many years ago. "The 300 Spartans" I believe it was called. It was a very good movie.

The last stand at Thermopalye is an interesting subject. It shows how commanding the right terrain-- in this case, a narrow pass--- can make all the difference. The Spartans may well have held for good if a traitor had not shown the Persians a way around the pass, allowing them to come at the Spartans from above and behind. They must have known they might be toast, as intelligence at the time was quite good. No matter what they were thinking, the delay caused by the battle allowed other Greek forces, particularly the navy, time to prepare for the final battles of the war, which they of course won. According to the History channel website, the next airing of "the last stand of the 300" will be March 30th @ 7:00 AM. You can check the schedule here: www.history.com/schedule.do?action=daily&date=20070327&time=0000&timeZone=EST&x=13&y=4Decatur, I found that avatar on a website full of them. I almost picked an animated gollum, but he was awfully creepy. That and he resembles a guy I know.
