Ok, A van full of merry outdoorsmen abducts you on the way home from work. They say that they are part of a secret society that tests the worthiness of Outdoorsmen. You will be dropped in the middle of large wilderness area ( hardwood forest, early spring ) and left for three weeks. In the back of of the van is all your equipment. You will be allowed to select four items from your personal gear, as well as the clothes on your back to take with you. If you are carrying usefful items from work, they count.
Only four items. What are they?

My picks were a Magnesium firestarter, camp hatchet, nylon cord, canteen. Four items is a tough pick. I'd take the firestarter, hatchet, and canteen regardless; but the cord was a tough call. Early spring, I could use a good blanket; but I figured I could construct a shelter to beat the worst weather, and cordage is oh so handy. I'd also like a knife, but a hatchet can cut and crudely shape wood as well as chop down trees. But it's hard to chop wood with a knife...

On my way home from work, well that already gives me a pocket knife and a Gerber tool, and my coffee Thermos to act as a canteen and cup, so magnesium fire starter, 22 mag rifle, hatchet and blanket. With the hatchet and Gerber tool you could make a lean to for shelter and with the fire starter build a small fire just under front for warmth and cooking, 22 mag should be able to furnish you with meat, greens may be a different story. To bad you can not get 5 and take a survival book that tells what plants are edible too. But there may still be some edible walnuts and acorns to eat and make a coffee type drink with.

Waterproof matches, hunting knife, .308 hunting rifle, & .308 cartridges. During the early spring I am wearing cold weather outdoor clothing to work, so I'm good to go.
