Why is it that some people believe that the deer are owned by the state? Just exactly who does own these critters?

You`re both right-God created them, as He did everything-but as our government, the state does indeed own the deer, the state being each of us who reside in Indiana. Hunters, as the primary stewards of wildlife, including white-tails, are simply the main beneficiaries of the states wildlife management practices.

Why is it that some people believe that the deer are owned by the state? Lug Because in the eyes of the law, the state does own the deer herd and other natural resources. There is a segment of society that believes otherwise and thinks that "if it is their land then they are their deer", but if they ever get caught acting on that belief they will find out very quickly that the state does own and control "their" deer.

Or when you hit it with your car! And you don't have to buy a tag, if its on your property. And yet nobody takes responsiblity if a deer does any damage. Seems like anyone that claims to own them, only owns them when it benefits them. This being said, its no wonder some people feel as if, if the deer are on their property they belong to them.
Coal and oil are other natural resources, and yet the landowner owns the rights to them.

Question??? IF the deer belong to the state, and in a democracy, the majority normally make the rules--and that MOST of the people in that state don't hunt, then why do we have the right to kill the deer???

So why don't they charge poachers with theft then? Seems to me if they valued them right they could charge them with grand theft and throw them in the clink!

I don't know.......I've heard many landowning folks refer to the live deer on their lands as "my deer"....LOL
If the deer are causing damage, there are ways to take care of that (allowing hunting).....or call the Biologist.

Very few places where deer do damage......evidence in the relative low numbers of damage permits issued. Poaching has it's own penalties, some of them harsher than what a thief would get. So, if they are the landowners deer , then why would someone whine when he gives out the permission to whack a few of them in the form of a private lease??? Some of you fellows are not being very consistant???

Because without the deer....they could not get one penny for that lease.....so are they SELLING the deer?

Because without the deer....they could not get one penny for that lease.....so are they SELLING the deer? What about a waterfowl lease? (waterfowl are not owned by the state) or a small game lease, such as one I have with a couple of guys only allowed to hunt quail on the property? Turkeys.....nobody hunts them, right? Camby, your not making any sense. None what's so ever. A hunting lease doesn't lease any animal, only the right to hunt. That's why it's not selling anything other than a chance. Hunting Rights lease....read that real slow 10 times and then define it. Now, if you name your deer and you spell out in the lease that you can only kill Bambi or Bamzilla, then you would be correct. Know anyone with a lease like that? And you still didn't answer the original question, why do we have the right to hunt any deer when most people in the state don't want to hunt?
