I had a pretty slow hunt over Thanksgiving week in Montana this year. I saw an average of probably 10-12 deer per day on public land, down from probably 40-50 per day last year. Also saw only one elk this year, on the last morning which was already being stalked by another group of hunters. Still, I was able to pass a few small mule deer bucks. I also saw two nice whitetail bucks this year, one of which I failed on the stalk and the other I failed on the shot. My dad rode along for this trip. He would nap in the tent or read in the car while I was out hunting, since he can't get around real well anymore. We also spotted from the road a few mornings, so he was able to get in on that. I hunted for six days. On the final evening, I took a doe off of some private block management land after my eight-year old told me over the phone that "I had better" bring home some steaks! It was a little over 300 yards, and although she had a buck with her she had the bigger body of the two. She had almost no fat though, which concerns me for the deer trying to make it through this winter. I think the difference between this year and last just came down to warmer weather and increased hunting pressure. The final week of November might be peak rut out there, but there were probably ten-fold the number of hunters out as last year, when I went early/mid-November. I certainly haven't given up on this area, and I'll be back in a year or two I'm sure. I'll probably go earlier in the season again next time though.

Yep, fresh back from Montana. Did you score?? It was a really slow hunt, didn't see a lot of game, but managed to fill a tag at least.

I've hunted down there a couple times during the early rifle seasons. It's a lot of fun, never have killed one though. You should have better luck spotting bucks in January.

I crock pot them, remove bones then use them in any sort of dish that uses pulled meat.

I saw a couple does last night. Changed brake pads in the dark to get ready for the Montana trip. Hunted and saw a couple does this morning. At work now, going out again around 3. Then loading the car in the dark. Pulling out and heading west at 3 AM.

I've been settled in for about an hour. I wanted to go down where I saw the does last night, but the wind was acting crazy down there. I'm up on top now.
I'm leaving for Montana Saturday, so my standards might be dropping a bit.

Congrats to the young feller!
I saw two does tonight. Checked a couple cams and still have bucks around, just yet to be in the right time/right place.

I've got the next few evenings to make it happen. Leaving for Montana on Saturday. I never have been good at hunting the late season.

I got the first doe shot at. Then about 10 am I got a double. Tagged out for the first hunt at Versailles. My buddy also shot a doe. Give more details once we get all them out. You have a lot of butcher work ahead of you!

Got my "sammich" deer for the season. Big buck, but a crap rack. He walked by right at sun up, Sat. 45 yd shot, he dropped at the shot. Rifle is a 44 mag, using 225 gr. lever evolution ammo. He field dressed 171 lbs. I really like those funky racked bucks! Congrats

Only one small buck moved past tonight.
Gotta work in the AM, but will be back at it tomorrow evening.
