I was taking two Clifty park co-workers to clean the south gate house when our phones went off. I said "The gatehouse is solid limestone so it's as good a place as any." We had no time to hunt around.
We peeked out the door as the steam coming from the power plant stack across the road changed direction about three times in two minutes. Then the beginnings of a funnel cloud drifted past. I don't know if it was the one that touched down or not. There was a brief blast of rain and golf-ball sized hail, and then nothing. Incredibly, a Duke crew burying a line for the gate worked casually throughout it all.
Meanwhile at home, A house in the subdivision right across from me was demolished, and several other buildings badly damaged. The thing seemed to skip around before crossing the river in dramatic fashion, pummeling Milton, then obliterating an RV campground toward Vevay. A barn in the country I have often thought of photographing is simply gone. Though we lost power, we didn't even have any limbs down. Very fortunate.
Have you seen this incredible footage?

Remember the tornado of 1974 in Madison? Was taking with stepdad other day about the Madison tornado and he reminded me of the 1974 tornado. He was in the civil defense at the time and worked that one for many days and nights.

I'm glad you and your family were unharmed. We drove through all the damage between Vevay and Madison yesterday. It was pretty bad.

I am 71 and never have I seen a Tornado. I have had them within a mile but never had one do any damage to my property. I remember the Palm Sunday tornados. Back in the 1960s. Dad took us on a drive through Adams Co to view the damage a month or so after they went through. Incredible damage throughout the area. They have always scared me since.

In 1999 a tornado took out about a dozen homes from the Ohio river up the hill towards my home. When it got to the top of hill the tornado went back up and flew right over my home. About 6 miles later it touched back down and went through the mid north part (Blue Ash) of Cincinnati. It only damage my shingles on the roof and knocked down dozen or so trees. It came at night and we were sleeping. No weather alarms, but it did come on 10 minutes later. I told my wife that's a tornado. Since power was out I could not see anything. When it was morning I could see the shingles on the ground and learned the tornado went right over the house. You could see the path through the woods.

Awesome footage. I've never seen one in person. I used to think it would be cool to see one in person, but after helping to clean up after a couple of them I hope I never have to see one.

This was our "bad one". An F3.. www.newburghmuseum.com/learn/2005-tornado/The year before we had a "small one" . 2004-5-27 - F1 Tornado That one dropped three big trees in my backyard with two falling on my house. $65,000 worth of damages. Farm Bureau paid every dime and even paid me for doing some of the clearing work.

The one in Whiteland missed us on a crossing pattern at about 4000 feet too dark to see but we could here it and feel the pressure change. Scary stuff I ended up helping a couple people rebuild

We had an F4 or F5 touch down not more than 1/8 mile from the house. How we didn't have more damage I don't know. Other than a broken window, a brick thru the roof and some other damage that was it. Trees on the other hand didn't fare so well. I believe I had to help Dad for the next month cut up Oak Trees. I don't want to go through that again.

Coworker was camping at Clifty during the tornado. He said the second round was worse because it was dark, bathhouse, they were told bathhouse would be unlocked for a shelter, so they went there only to be locked. They ended up in the Inn until the all clear. The hail tore up his awning, but that was it.
He said it was an unforgettable spring break for his kids.

You guys were lucky! I was out shed hunting when the storms began.... We however were only on the edge of them. I heard the severe weather warnings go out for Central Indiana.
We've had tornadoes in our county however never close to us. But back in 2015 we did have a funnel cloud pass overheard. It was a little strange looking up and the sky was greenish and you could see the swirling and a slight dip. It was easy to see that the top of the tornado was forming. We were almost glued to the front room watching that thing making sure nothing would happen in our front yard. Then Purdue got hit by that thing within the hour....

That is crazy, heard about it all the way out here on the news. Seen a couple funnels back home, didn't materialize. Don't want to ever see one if I had the choice....SF Woody
