Just got back from a trip to Florida with another couple. Although there were some fun moments and the girls got their fix of sitting in the sun for a few days, the oceanfront of Florida is way down on the list of destinations I would ever choose to go to. This was about my 4th or 5th trip and I simply do not understand how or why so many people look forward to this journey every winter.
Anywhere within 40 miles of either coast is wall to wall traffic and people, everything is under construction and being developed and there is very little real estate that isn't paved or has something built on it. When you go out to eat the restaurants are almost always very crowded and noisy and you wait a long time. It's like warm Chicago with an ocean.
If you are not a fan of sitting on the beach or around a pool there just isn't much to do. A guy can only drink and eat so much. We did sneak in an air boat ride and a couple military museums which were enjoyable and interesting but they were quite a way from where we stayed and required more driving in terrible traffic. There was no place close or practical to fish if we wanted to, would have had to drive to some pier and fish elbow to elbow or get a charter boat and do the same.
I do find the interior farm country interesting, far less populated and I'm sure there is some great freshwater fishing to be had with many nice lakes and rivers, but it's no place we could ever get the girls to stay. Next year they can do a girls trip to the beach.
Anyway, rant over with. Time to get started with spring fishing and projects around here and looking forward to mushroom season.

Just got back myself from a trip down south. We stayed at Orange beach Alabama, right on the Florida state line. My Marine Corps buddy and his wife stay there January thru March. They live in upper Michigan on Lake Michigan so they get snow by the feet instead of inches. He brought his boat so we fished and caught a lot of dinners. I wouldn’t stay there 3 months either, 10 days was plenty for me.

I am a sucker for the beach. Get up early and surf fish until the swimmers get too thick or shark fish after dark.
My wife's grandparents used to live around Weekie Watchee Florida Jan-Mother' Day. They lived on a channel that could boat out to the gulf. It was awesome. Good citrus, quiet residential compared to the popular beaches.

Me neither. The inlaws sold their place up here and bought a trailer a park near Leesburg. I helped my Father-in-Law build 2 longrifles during their stays.
Now my MiL is a different story. Knew no filter. Lectured my wife constantly, ran the washer everyday, brought the mail in everyday and arranged it. She was the type that felt your business was her business.
So yes Snow Birding was not for me.

If my brother didn’t live down there I could care less to ever step foot on a beach or be in Florida.

I get it with the traffic, it is a pain in the rear. But I’d trade our January/February for some warm weather and good fishing. Heading down to the Naples area on March 14. Mom and the kids beach it most days, I drown a few dozen shrimp. 1 charter trip thrown in too for good measure. We’re all happy.

Neighbors moved to a place about 45 minutes N of Tampa (Spring Hill) and they love it down there. Not on the beach but sorta close. Too dang hot for me in the summer. I'd have to have a boat for fresh water. A customer winters at Lake Okeechobee. He slays the crappie there.

We love it usually two weeks a year very therapeutic. Stay in indian shores and we cheap it really go to county and state parks no issues. Usually spend a grand on food and more on charters and stuff. I'm going to buy a place for duff to be pool boy.

Whenever I go over there to do work on his pond I usually leave there with a gallon zip loc bag full of crappie fillets.
