Do you guys have any recommendations for a lower cost security camera system? We have talked about getting something for the house. We were thinking 2 or 3 cameras. We have wifi in the house that reaches to the garage.

The Cobra line from Harbor Freight work just fine. Ours are hard wired so I do not know about their cordless ones. The hard drive, using 5 cameras, holds about a week and a half of video before it automatically overwrites itself.

I use Defender systems. I have wired at both of my homes that I can pull up on my tv or phone. There is a function to alert because of motion but I disabled that. They are 4K and 4 camera systems.

Pinoc and bill9068, how clear are the pictures at night and how far will they work? I mean clear enough and what distance to read a license plate or to ID a facial picture is what I'm wondering. Night time is when most cams struggle and night time is when the majority of things happen.

I have the Cobra Harbor Freight security cameras here at our house. I just have two cameras. One will catch anything around my garage. The other will catch anything that enters our driveway and the road in front. They record everything to a 64GB SD card. They were easy to set up and use. I have had mine for two years without any problems. I think they were around 250 bucks. Sometimes Harbor Freight has coupons and you can get them a little cheaper. They tell me if anything or anybody comes on our property. You can get an app for your phone that will notify you and send you the video if the cameras are activated. They only record when they are triggered by movement. I think ours takes a 15-second video, but I'm not sure my wife is the one that takes care of it.

I use the Blink wireless security system. Very happy with how far the wireless link works as it was a concern of mine to reach the pole barn. Everything is clear and easy to program. I was able to pick up a couple 5 packs on sale through Amazon.

Night time is when most cams struggle and night time is when the majority of things happen. They are clear but when you zoom in like to see a license plate they are grainy. You can make it clearer but it takes up more space on the hard drive and if your Wi-Fi is slow it lags some when in Hi-Def.

I ask because if I put up a camera system I want to be able to ID whoever is messing around and not just use it as a notification to me that something is going on. I want to be able to give the police something that they can make an ID from.

I ask because if I put up a camera system I want to be able to ID whoever is messing around and not just use it as a notification to me that something is going on. I want to be able to give the police something that they can make an ID from. I think a system that is that capable would be cost prohibitive. I am thinking based on my ring experience the brighter the light the better the picture. From my door to the apple tree deer frequent is about 100 feet. If they trigger the security light they are very visible. If the Ring is triggered but not the lights they are grainy. Any motion kills good images. Up close it gives pictures that are much better. Can you make it so there is only one way in and out? Force them to go by a pair of GOOD trail cams with a quick trigger speed. Get plate numbers coming and going. I am not real impressed with the function of my Ring. It seems too slow to respond and alert. I may not have it set right though or my Wifi is at fault. I do not like the $10 a month fee. Getting notices of a pair of coyotes in a field near some subdivision have zero benefit to me. The driveway motion alarm I put in 2 years ago gives me a quicker response but with out pics. I am thinking a home brew system is more what you want.
