How much do you all pay for your hunting leases, and approximately how many acres of habitat/cover (non ag) do they they contain? I haven't leased any hunting land since around 2009, and just curious what guys are paying nowadays. Thanks!!

Sweat equity, respect for the land and landowners is all I pay for the combined 624 acres of permission property I hunt.
That does include some ag on the propertirs though. Still lots of hardwoods and CRP.

Nothing! We have permission on a 15-20 acre piece of land owned by friends, I have permission for squirrel and turkey on a 40 acre property owned by some other friends, and not sure how much acreage on the Purdue property we hunt where my Dad has a hunting area under his name.

I never had lease since I have 65000 acres here at work to hunt mostly bow hunting. Pay zero for 70 acres of private, then i own 12 acres my self.
But i can tell you this 150 acres with 52 acres being wooded. 3 miles from my house in Daviess county went for $20 acre=$3000 dollars the lease was gone 10 min after it was posted.

Fortunately I've never had to lease. I've always been able to hunt private ground for free without even having any sweat equity involved. I had access to about 2000 acres, but due to property sales over the years, I'm down to a 250-acre farm and another around 100 acres. Neither have crops or food plots.
I think the leases I've seen near me are around $12 an acre.

About half a million acres +/-. No fee. I do have to share though.

I have a LTL ($325 in 1986) and hunt on my brother's farm. So just some traditional snacks I bring.

I hunt our own ground plus lease a nice 220 acres that (5) of us split costs on. It's a real good property and runs around $25 per acre which is very reasonable per man. The ground about 1/3 cover 2/3 ag and hay fields; multiple small woodlots, hilly, wooded and brushy drainages, etc. We've had the same property for 13 years and will probably try to keep it long as we can.
I can assure you it's far cheaper to lease -vs- owning hunting ground.

steiny I understand what you’re saying about out of pocket expenses , but unless a guy does something really dumb he will make money by owning land, not cost him. When my dad was young, most recreational type land was going for under $500/acre. Now, same area, it’s $5k or more. I’m in my 30’s, and just since I’ve been paying attention I’ve seen land prices more than double in my area.

Our house and land it’s now worth more than double what we paid for it just 7 years ago. I’ve looked into leasing just never found anything worth while to me. I have my small parcel as well other private on the southern end of the county. Also, tons of public to choose from.

I pay a total 840 buck total for two different leases. One lease contains about 700 acres and the other has 120. There is I think 8 guys on the 700 acres, but about half don't hunt they are on it for the fishing. The 120 there are three of us. I also hunt some public ground that is very close to where I live. I hate having to pay to hunt, but if I want to hunt ground that I have hunted all my life I have to pay. For years it cost nothing.

I do hate that, we used to have permission spots to rabbit hunt when I was growing up. A megafarm bought it all up and will not allow us to rabbit hunt unless we join their "hunt club" and Lord knows how much that costs. I'll pass, but I know well what you mean by trying to stay on the ground you started with.

I have only leased land to hunt one time. It was about a 5 acre wooded plot that I split the fee with a buddy, the owner told us we would be the only ones hunting it. We paid $250 each this land was on what the owner called a deer highway between two large wooded areas. The owner showed us pictures of deer that have passed through this lot but we found out the deer pass through at night during hunting season. The only deer we saw passing through during the day was a big doe with two fawns & a yearling four point buck. So on the last day of gun season I took the buck as he ran through.

After seeing this thread, I checked out some available leases in adjoining counties online. MANY said "not much cover, but should yield deer during certain times of the year." This tells me that it's poor land that someone wants to make money off of. Deer aren't staying there, but you just might, might see a deer that bumbles through during the rut. Lol!
