How many deer hunters do you think headed into the woods the weekend before legal gun season opened for deer?
I had every intention of grabbing my crossbow and hitting the woods the weekend prior to gun opener, but I just had too much to do outside before the weather turned bad. I did hear a lot of distant gun shots that day - indicative of open day of gun season.
When the light did come up this past Saturday morning (legal gun opener for deer); I was sitting in my tree stand and noticed a distinct lack of gunfire.
I think I heard the least amount of gunfire this opening day than I have ever heard since I started hunting. I also noticed a lack of hunters in the usual spots I pass on the way to my grounds, opening day.
I got the email press release from the DNR stating gun opener was a week later this year. I wonder how many people were checking deer shot with a gun in on November 11th...

I’m sure plenty. I was hearing single gun shots in the woods the last week of October. Plus, DNR had to put out a reminder that gun season hadn’t started yet, so probably more than a few.

Hard to believe that any serious deer hunter would not keep abreast of when the firearm season open every year, but reading some Facebook pages says it aint so..
Hopefully they checked the deer in as a firearm kill so they can get a CO visit.

I'll be honest, up till about 3 weeks before I thought it opened up on the week before it did. Of course, since I follow this site I would have figured it out. I was talking to someone at Church and they were talking about it opening the Saturday before Thanksgiving and I thought they were wrong. That's when I looked.

Northeast Marshall County had way more shots than normal opening morning especially between 7:10-7:40. The rest of the weekend I only heard a few more shots. Sunday evening I didn't hear a single shot. I harvested a doe at 9:20 Saturday morning to put some meat in the freezer.

I heard quite a few shots the weekend before it opened. I was in the house opening morning and only heard a couple close shots. I remember years past counting them from the stand and stopping when it got over 100.

I'll just say the actions and thinkings of many that hit the woods....is the precise reason why I despise when folks expect me to "blindly support all people who find themselves hunting in the woods or fields".
Nope. Hard nope for me. I'll say no more.

IMO not many. (Waterfowl opened that same weekend, as did refuge hunts) Guy's hear gun shots at first light and evening and start making assumptions. One would have to live in a cave to not know when opening day of firearms is in this day and age. Some trying to make something out of nothing.
