On the property I'm hunting I've been consistently seeing a small doe with 2 fawns. I was able to watch them for about an hour 2 weekends ago and she was still very protective of them. At one point the fawns were almost 100 yards apart and she would switch between them watching them like a hawk. This past weekend I saw one of the fawns walk down into a valley then the doe smelled me and blew. She purposely went towards the point of the ridge she was on and blew down into the valley before she took off. I thought does normally quit being so protective by now? Has anyone seen behavior like this before basically at the tail end of the first rut? I may be way off here but I'm wondering if she was born late or will go into estrous late?

Very few young does produce twin fawns. Usually their first drop is a single fawn. After that she can drop the twins. Maybe she is an older(and wiser) small stature doe?

I hadn't thought about the twin thing. I really wish I would've gotten a pic of her but it was about an hour before dark and I didn't want to risk getting busted.
