This is probably one of my favorite burgers.
And I'm not including home cooked.
As I was driving past Kankakee, IL from a job on the southside of Chicago, I recalled an old tavern near Danville, IL.
I haven't eaten there in over 35 years and I wondered if it was still open.
Google showed it was open so I set the GPS.
This place is a bit off the beaten path SE of Danville, IL and very near the Indiana line.
It's called The Moon-Glo Bar & Grill.
And they still grill their Moonburger:
This thing ends up being around 3/4 pound of beef after being cooked down.
It's thick, juicy and tasty:
I met the owner, Phil Adams, years ago and he still owns the joint. He'll grill away and then come around and sit with ya to chat if you so desire.
That's him sitting at the end of the bar talking with another fella!
We got laughing today as he told the story of how that charcoal grill pit came to pass that you see in the foreground.
It seems that his dad and another guy sat around drinking after hours one day and they came up with the idea of building that grill.
They jumped to it and the next thing they knew they had about caught the place on fire. They had not thought about a good ventilation system and soon the place was filled with smoke.
To this day, Phil fires up the coals every Friday and customers can come and grill their own steak to their liking if they wish!
Interestingly, Phil said his dad bought the place from "Old man Willett's girlfriend."
Willett was Dick Van Dyke's (who hailed from Danville, IL) Father -in-law.
Willett apparently went to prison for killing a guy. When he got out, as a felon, he was not allowed the license to run the joint so he put the place in his girlfriends name. With no business sense, it went downhill until Phil's dad bought the joint.
If you're only into a modern, uppity, well lit place, then don't bother to stop in here.
If you're into one of the country's best burgers and some super friendly staff as well as the owner,
check out the Moon-Glo if you're ever in the area!
