We (me, wife, one daughter went to Cluckers) Saturday evening for dinner. We don't go out very often, but this was a combination of poor planning and a long day of yard work. Cluckers is a sports bar and the food is good enough.
One appetizer, three entrees, two beers, and one soft drink was right at $75.00 before tip. I had 10 wings that cost $16.00!
How often will an average family of four go out at that rate? It would have been $100 if our other daughter would have went. Cluckers is by no means an upscale place, It's basically burgers, wings, and beer.
I'd like to purchase a four door Jeep for myself. I've long ago conceded that a car payment is a part of life for me and I'm willing to have one when necessary. However, current interest rates combined with ridiculous vehicle costs are no-goes for me. I'll continue to drive my paid-for-with-cash 2004 Jeep.
If the UAW gets its wish and wages go up 40% plus other benefits, will mfgs raise new car prices at the same rate? In my line of work, if we raised our rates even 25%, we would be out of business in no time.
I have to think that my family is not exclusive in cutting back and reducing spending.

I took my family out last night because it was my oldest Matthew birthday. We are a family of five, but we had my mother in law so six. The bill was $177.98 and tip 36 more. Luckily, girlfriends couldn't make it this time, both had to work. I'm glad it's only once a year.

I'm a 4th generation auto worker who's a proud UAW member. Our wages are not the biggest factor in the rise of vehicle costs. The media just makes it seem that way. We went 12 years with out a raise, yet vehicle costs continued to rise. From 2019-2023 our wages went up 5%. Yet the cost to replace my 2016 F-150 went up approx. 40-45%. So explain to me how our wages and benefits did that...? |

Some places have really put the screws to the prices and others haven't. We are adjusting accordingly.
Picked up chicken for family dinner to go with homemade sides and a 16 piece bucket was supposed to be $40!! Went into the KFC app and ended up with an 8 piece bucket and and 8 piece fingers for $20. That fed 5 with several pieces of of chicken for leftovers.

Do a fast food breakfast. You can go to some sitdown restaurants and get a better breakfast for about the same money.
A guy bought a small pizza place. He offered a good BBQ menu along with the usual pizza menu. He said the wings he sold were at a very small margin. His was carry out only so no beer to make up for the difference. Did help with fundraisers for the schools and Huntertown park. Recently closed his doors. Partly due to a Pizza Hut opening and their lower prices.
I do not blame the UAW for prices but most big companies that choose to close the doors of USA plants in favor of Mexico and Pacific Rim manufacturing facilities. And no one can compete against their labor costs.

Maybe the best deal in a fast food breakfast is still the Hardee's Breakfast Platter. Two eggs, "hashrounds", a biscuit, and an order of gravy for $5. Recently went up from $4!
We used to get that breakfast every Saturday morning during the Covid shutdown for $3.85 each.
I would eat the eggs and then break up the biscuit and mix with the hashrounds and then cover with the gravy. Dang good for fast food biscuit and gravy!
Heck, I forgot! You also get a sausage patty or bacon with the platter.

Grocery prices aren't much better. We bought enough food to have tacos/taco salad for our kids, 6 people total. We spent $70 for that meal not counting drinks. And half of the kids we thought were eating with us ended up leaving early and didn't eat.

Ask High Cotton.. I met him there for lunch on one of his many travels and that is what I recommended. The Chicken Stir Fry is a favorite too. I get the senior size as it is a big bowl. I think the problem (for those of us that do have a problem) is that in an environment that already has very high inflation AND a UAW workforce that is currently making +-30% more per hour than the national average (not including benefits) which equal 15+% of a car's price the UAW comes out with demands that are pretty outrageous on their face. The average UAW wage is currently $58k (wage only) and the current demand is a 40% raise COUPLED with a reduction in hours to 32 a week (that comes up to $48 and hour for a part time job with a total labor cost of $150hr with benefits) AND a return to the old pension plan that nearly bankrupted the Big 3 previously. Trying to link pay directly to profits or product cost is pretty problematic when the majority of the workforce being covered by the contract provide no specialized skill to the process. The labor market is such that replacements would not be hard to come by. When you couple that with the bombastic, threatening and insulting rhetoric from the UAW leadership like the president, and I have no stomach for it. Personally, I also have the perspective of my father being a Chrysler Dealership bodyman for almost 50 years and the OG sellout the UAW did by making the bargain with management to not take those folks in return for more $$$$ in the coffer. UAW strikes affect those highly skilled and trained folks horribly and do ZERO for them on the back end. |

I think it's human nature to always want more and more. Be it money, appreciation, etc. I really enjoy listening to one of our neighbors complain about his job and pay. He's retired USAF and a UPS jet captain. He makes north of $250k and works 14 days/month. I'll dig ditches by hand for that pay and schedule. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't an increase in the cost of doing business eventually trickle down and result in a burden the end-user? |

Daphne and I went to One Eyed Jacks last Saturday in Winamac. We both had burgers, fries and a soft drink and split an appetizer and slice of pie. $63 out the door.
