As most of you on here know, I've rebuilt or restored a number of old scooters in the past decades. Most of these have been BMW's from the 60's and 70's. So now, I'm into the latest bike. This Airhead (or Boxer to some) is a 1971, Slash 5. In other words, it's an R75/5 which is an opposed, 2 cylinder, 750cc, shaft drive motorcycle. The first issue I will tackle with the bike is a partially fried wiring harness. Here we go!  |

Working into the night here on the bike. I am into the wiring harness which terminates in the headlamp bucket.  Now that I've found the bad wires, I'm working out the culprit for the cause, hoping I don't repeat the previous owner's mistake.  I've already met with one of my ole Beemer buddy that supplies me with vintage parts. I just hope that the parts I got from him are what I need for the repair. One step at a time! |

Some of the simplest things can sure cause major problems. The culprit in this case was "apparently" loose hardware at the front brake controls. This allowed the grip bracket to swivel, thus grounding out one of the brake switch terminals against the handlebars:  I've double insulated the switch terminals with shrink tube and tightened the grip bracket. Now to finish the wiring harness and test my work, hoping to see NO smoke!  |

Home for a few days so I’m back to this project.
I got parts laid out yesterday and moving ahead.

It is a 1971 Black BMW R75/5 with a Toaster tank. The true and authentic Toaster's are actually 1972 and 1973 models. Those can bring some serious coin depending on condition. Mine came with the toaster tank which is what I wanted. For over 20 years I've had a project in mind that would utilize various components to build this bike to my "vision." I have saved various components from other project bikes, bartering and such. The panniers that will go on this bike were originally white British Craven bags. My Father-in-law painted them black as he and I have discussed this project many times. He knows what my complete bike will look like. So the toaster tank is quite desirable. That was an easy process today:  These weathered intake pipes and the chrome battery covers came for other projects so I fit them on today. Amazingly, I have seen those 4 pieces in an original state bring near $1,000:  This is were the craziness came in today. I'm in the process of trying to fit the Craven brackets to the frame. These are were the panniers (saddlebags) will be mounted. Not going well-guess the Brits don't want to play well with the Krauts:  The bracket hardware is British so am using my Whitworth wrenches. Whitworth is a weird version, somewhere outside the world of Standard and Metric:  This is the backside of one of the bags that might give an indication of the mounting process:   Dinner with some folks now. I'll probably dive back into the project later tonight and possibly tomorrow. |

DAS ENDE!!! The Toaster runs and rides great. This is the culmination of the vision I've had for years on setting up a Beemer like this. Electric or Side Kickstart, the engine fires right up!   |
