This guy/gal (chose not to try and sex it!) was just down from the house today. Durn things are just evil looking. We got him out in the road to get a better picture. He/she rattled (like a locust) but would never strike. Probably a little over 3' but thick!

Timber Rattler? I'm glad that they aren't up this way. Snakes don't bother me, but I'd rather not run across any poisonous ones, and I'd prefer my dogs didn't as well.

Beautiful. I wish I had more snakes around. A large gardner eat a lizard at my place.

Not saying I would kill one just to kill it. But I hear you can eat them. I would also like to save the skin off of one. Are they considered endangered in Indiana? I think if I had one near the house I'd probably relocate it somewhere away from the neighborhood. If I couldn't eat it and save the skin.

Although a whole bunch of people don't care, it is illegal to kill or harass them.

I have eaten Western Diamondback. To me, it was not really like chicken, more like frog leg. If you want a full belly you had better get several. As I recall there wasnt a ton of meat on them. But that was a long time ago and far away 😁

Duff, what part of Hoosier please? I hunt right along the river in Perry County, I've got a spot that looks absolutely marvelous for habitat for these but have never seen a single snake.

Northern end in the Deam Wilderness area. Wife works for the Forrest service and found a nest next to an illegal camp they were cleaning out. Crazy, 2 rattlers were in that hollow log. The big guy was hanging out about 10-16 feet away, and there was another hollowed out stump that had two small copperheads. We didn't stick around too long. Pretty sure that was 2015 between my back surgeries.

The spot that I found faces South and has rock outcroppings intermittent with Dead Fall and leaf litter basically the whole Hillside looks like Steps for a giant man. Cracks and crevices everywhere a high chipmunk density area. You would think they'd be all over that in the spring! But again I have never seen a single snake in that area, I always watch my step around those rocks and that entire Hill!

Brown, Jackson, Monroe and Lawrence counties have a good bit.

Brown county state park has quite the population of them. I’ve only saw one, but seems every year someone’s dog gets bit by one in the campground.
