Would it be too difficult to standardize the mounting and connections on power tool batteries? Seems that the current system allows each maker to create a monopoly. Since I am not a pro relying on my tools to perform every sometimes they sit for a while. They have a lot more time sitting around that running. So when the old Ni-Cad batteries died for my Milwaukee drill and Sawzall I was out of luck. I could not even find the generiac brand to fit. A call to customer service got me nowhere but the advice to buy an adapter off eBay. So I had to buy an adapter, battery and charger. The adapter adds a little and length to an already heavy and long tool.
Plus the new batteries are Li-ion the same as every other new battery powered product in the world runs off of. Just my opinion but a little competition in the this area would bring the price down.

It's done intentionally. Planned obsolescence and proprietary fittings etc.

Order just the Ni-cd battery's and install them in your dead battery.

Order just the Ni-cd battery's and install them in your dead battery. There's a guy on ebay in Ohio that rebuilds the batteries. Send him your old one, he replaces the batteries in it and sends it back.

I am kind of stuck with Milwaukee right now. If I wanted to try DeWalt or Ryobi anything but the Mil that means another battery and charger. The Home Depot guy said the reason the battery was so much was the use of Li-ion in everything. He did not have an answer for the cost of the Charger though.

You answered your own question in your second sentence.
The reality is that, once you invest in a particular brand, you are stuck with it unless you are willing to make another equal investment.
I did buy some Ryobi knock-off batteries from Amazon a few years ago. The only difference I could tell was the actual fit in the tools wasn't perfect. Other than that, they were just as good as the originals.
Just as bad, in my opinion, is printer ink. That's the only way mfgs can continue to profit from a given person or business. Sell the printer, then gouge the customer for the required ink.

You could also check with batteries/plus and see if they can replace the batteries.

My little project was being held up without the saw. It is the only tool I do not have a corded back up tool for. I would dump Milwaukee in a heartbeat but the other tool makes would just be more of the same.

I have some batteries for Milwaukee I'd make you a deal on. Some still new in packages, never used. I have like 10 of the 20volt small batteries. I switched all to kobalt and dewalt
