"But, Grandpa! I've never even heard a gobble in the woods!"

Those were the first words from my wide-eyed grandson this morning as the gobblers sounded off to my hoot owl locator call!
I said, "Yeah buddy. And now I don't know where to set up because we're surrounded by these thunder chickens."
I had not thought about the fact that he had actually never heard a Tom gobble in the woods.
The morning started crazy because I had forgotten to get his license and the website was screwed up. I guess I've just become complacent with my Lifetime license. So, I was a bit frazzled since we were about 15 minutes later than I had wished.
We opted for an area that seemed to give us the best opportunity based on my best guess of the closest roosted Tom.
I was walking him through the various calls. And we hit everything from slate calls to push-pin to box calls mixed with my various mouth calls. Not exactly my norm to use so many calls but I wanted him to get the full experience. The funny thing was that these gobblers were blowing up at every call from every direction.
We had set our "funky triangle" at about 15 yards. My mistake. That was too close. Oh, well I thought. It'll be what it'll be!
He called it funky because I'm still using an old messed up jake decoy that had been attacked years ago by a coyote!
Maybe 10 minutes into our sit, I started to think I should get my phone and take a few quick pics and then I hear a flydown and sure enough,
I see a turkey some 110 yards across the tilled field. I grabbed the binoculars and to my amazement this Tom was on a dead sprint toward our decoys. In less than a minute, He came barreling in and thumped the jake on a dead run!
I mean like a Mack truck to settle a score with a Yugo!
Tyler had the bead on the Tom and Kaboom!!!
It was way too close and he flat missed the bird!
We have practiced a lot with the JC Higgins model 20, 12 gauge which was a gift from his other Papaw.
And he knows that the gun is dead nuts on from 25-30 yards with the Hevi-Shot #5's
Before I could get the words out, Kaboom!
He had jacked another round and let fly!
Well, the shot flew! But the Tom didn't!
Busted his first gobbler with a second shot from 27 yards!
He told me a few minutes later!
"Grandpa, I thought you told me that sometimes you can sit all day and never see a single turkey!"
I just shook my head, gave him a quick fist bump and hugged him! Oh, we had a good laugh!
