It's not done me any good so far this year. Hopefully the next few weeks will be better conditions for the morels! How about y'all? Any special "stick" y'all use for da shrooms!? As I was searching the other day, I realized that I've been using the same stick for 45 years now. It's actually a cane and Andy Binkerd gave it to me back in 1978 when I managed a grain elevator in North Liberty, IN. He was a great old dude. He used to come into the elevator to weigh his load of pigs. I never charged him anything. One day he walked in just as proud as a peacock and presented me with his hand burned hickory cane as it was his way of showing me his appreciation. I'm curious, too. Any of you up in the northern part of the state know of a farming family with the Binkerd name? I believe he was from around Bremen.

A treasured item for sure. I don't carry a walking stick while mushroom hunting because it never fails that I will lay it down and then walk off with out it, then I find myself hunting my stick.

Very nice memento you have with a lot of history. I was cleaning out in the garage id say about 10 yrs ago when I came across one of my sons walking sticks, he used it as kid when he would go back exploring on the farmers field and woods behind us. I thought it was long gone and about throwed it out to the burn pile. Then I thought I should hang on to it and make it a walking stick for my self, I've added some paracord and tether to it for added functionality . I have found that I really like having it with me when I'm out and about, it stays in the trk 24/7. Only found a few mushrooms on friday, oh how I wish it was a mushroom finding stick. Here are some sticks that I have cut and dried and ready for the knife to clean up, the one that is finished was my step dads walking/mushroom/dog deterrent stick when he walked, I kept it after he passed away in 2020.

I've never heard of him and I know (or know of) most every farmer in our community.

I use the same stick hunting mushrooms or squirrels. Just a Hickory with a hole to hold my squirrel tote when I find a place to stop for a spell.

A man used to come to the shoots at Friendship with a bunch of those vine wrapped sticks. He set up camp along the road to the Rand House across from the range. His sticks were nicely carved, painted and sealed. The carvings were snakes. Everyone called him the snake stick man. The snakes were detailed very good and realistic hence why I never got one as my wife had a huge fear of snakes.
